  • Wow you guys have been chatty over the past few days!

@Wallbash - I'm lost, are those photos from like the 70s or something? :o Hope I haven't made a prat of myself there :)

@TomsMom - best wishes to TomsDad.

We've got a carpenter/joiner round tonight to quote us on fitting the doors. Will let you know when I hear back from him.

Good news from our end in that we found someone locally to install our multi fuel stove. He's charging £280 to fit the flu and new chimney pot then we have an inspection to check everything is ok and the stove can be fitted. Who hoo :) We kindly got some money given to us to pay for it which we're so pleased about. Hopefully in time for Xmas :)

    Great news.

If you dont mind me asking, whats the total price you are being quote for the supply and installation of everything? I dont think we got a bad deal but I dont think it was cheap. then again I've got nothing to judge it against, hence the question :)

platerer is on a nice earner. going to make 150 quid for about 6 hours work! cant be bad.

Thats nothing. I asked the pension advisors for my previous company a simple question and they replied that it would take approx 30mins work to asnwer and they charged £75/hour for admin tasks and £150-200/hour for advice (plus VAT of course!)
I found the answer out myself which took me 5 mins and 1 phone call.

    Nearly :D middle '80's

Just posting , to show that restoration is a task that can be tackled by the
beginner . Those that are struggling , look at my photos , it can be done.

After posting last photo will try and give you some idea of time scale
Prices wont mean a lot .

So have wrecked the house . started on the foundations , without a builder in sight.
( but a few nights paying for some drinks down the pub)

Got to say I'd love to do that kind of renovation but not if you have to live in the house while its being done! Maybe next time ;)

Our builders are making good progress as despite the miserable forecasts, the weather hasn't been bad at all for the last 2 days. block work is going up at a reasonable rate, and the plan is still to have the roof on within the next 2 weeks. not sure thats realistic but who knows.

Had a call about the Jeld-Wen patio doors to say that they have extended lead times at the moment and expected delivery would be mid november at the earliest and would this be a problem. I said yes and then she offered an alternative model (smoothfold) which she says is exactly the same (same wood, glazing, fitting) except it comes fully factory finished i.e. already laquered. And its in stock so should be delivered on time etc. I've had a quick look online and I'm certain that its what B&Q sell as their standard product as all the fixings look the same (B&Q dont have it branded, only the 3m+ wide doors are branded Jeld-Wen).
Just need to get a window to match.

the builders have also started fixing in the insulation into the cavity. there is quite an ingenious fixing that clips onto the wall ties and holds it against the inside leaf.

Not sure if I mentioned it but got the official paperwork in saying the warrant had been granted :j

the photos are great wallbash! :D

we have a shed base! and we have also painted the hall stairs and landing with the "white" base coat on the new plaster. Some bits have been oversmoothed so the paint is not sticking! very annoying will probably need 3 coats of emulsion. We just painted to keep the dust down as it is really getting me down in there now!!

    How is TomsDad doing?? :)

:ABeing Thrifty Gifty again this year:A

He had his stem cell infusion yesterday. They sent 13-14 million stem cells over from Germany, 6-7 million have been given to TD, the other 6-7 million have been frozen as a backup in case of problems. His nurse said he's been given more than she has in her body as a fit and well person.

The machine controlling the infusion kept playing up but the nurse stayed with him to make sure the procedure went OK. He's had no ill effects, I've spoken to him this morning and he sounds as good as before, very positive and in good spirits. His isolation room has windows to the outside but no windows onto the unit so he doesn't see anyone unless they come into his room, fully gowned, masked, gloves etc. At least his previous room had a window onto the unit and he could wave to the nurses etc.

The last couple of days my chest feels a bit like it's been sandpapered, I hope I'm not coming down with anything as they wont let me in to see him. I've no other symptoms, and I always get a rash if I have a viral infection and no sign at the moment. Fingers crossed it comes to nothing as I want to be on that train tomorrow and TD wants his visitors!

Fingers crossed it doesn't come to anything :)
Glad to hear everything went ok so far too.
  • Got my quote for doors...£280 for 5 doors. One door is more awkward than the rest and he'll probably be working a long day as he said he wouldn't get it done in 1 day.

    That's £56 a door. Hmmm. I'm in Surrey...

    What do you guys think?

I just wanna go for it, I liked the guy, and I could have doors on by Christmas without having to lift a finger! Think I'm answering my own question :)
