Do you have a local corner shop? Ours is always delighted to exchange change into notes as long as they are in bank bags.

    i agree with krisp.
my daughter worked as a waitress and had lots of change all the time. the bank asked her to separate them into bags of each denomination (each bag had it's own amount), and then they let her deposit them, no problems.

I've taken up to £20 in bags of 1p, 2p, and 5p pieces to HSBC, and I had no trouble exchanging them for cash.

Hi. My local post office has stopped taking in bags of change, however, you can pay bags of change (already counted up and bagged) into your account but only up to 5 bags at a time. Don't know if banks work the same and have a limit or not. hth

I would get some coin bags from the bank, organise your change and take it in over a few days, to pay in to your account. Your bank should have a weighing machine that can tell if the right amount is in each bag.

    I've done it myself (HSBC).
Better yet, many of the HSBC branches now have deposit machines which will just accept a random assortment of coins and sort them out into slots, totalling up the amount and depositing straight into a bank account for you. No bags needed at all.

I imagine that other banks have similar machines, but I've only seen them at HSBC branches (I work for them, so I see a lot of their branches and rather few of other banks...)

Then your local Post Office is disobeying central policy.

Which is - coins must be taken in payment for goods/services (which includes paying into an account). At their discretion they may change the coins to notes for you but don't have to.

They can ask you to wait - let other customers jump the queue. Ad if you bring so many that they have no storage for them, then they can refuse.

Same with my local corner shop. Apparently the bank charges them for withdrawing coins for change
