We know that you drive too fast, hence the speeding ticket, correct or not

Too fast for what? Some artificial speed limit that is irrelevent at the time it was exceeded? Speed is not an issue. It is inappropriate speed that is dangerous and set speed limits do not and will not ever address this issue. Additionally most limits were set when the mechanical ability and reliabilty of cars was nowhere near as efficient as your modern motor.

And, of course, the latest independent staistics have proved that speed cameras and their ilk have effectively had so little impact upon road safety that in the main they are just cash cows.

A little common sense on both sides of the law would be more effective and safer.

Modern motors may be efficient, modern drivers are not. As seen by the number of "Can I get off my speeding ticket?" threads.

I don't buy the "speed cameras do nothing for road safety" guff. How many times have you been overtaken by a speed camera? How many times have you had to pull into the inside lane because a speed camera is doing 60 in the middle lane? Haw many times have you been stuck behind a speed camera doing 10mph because it's on the 'phone?

Drivers impact on road safety, unfortunately they cannot be trusted to drive properly and with due regard for anyone else so limits, artificial or otherwise have to be implemented and then we get the "oh it was only a little over the limit", "oh it was 2.00 am in the morning", "oh I didn't see the sign because I was texting my mate" brigade come and not expect a bit of grief
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

We don't "know" anything, until and unless the OP has decided to either accept a fixed penalty, or gets convicted in Court.

Now get back in your Rover 416 and put your trilby hat and stringback driving gloves on.

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

How many times has the driver in front of you suddenly slammed on brakes when they noticed a speed camera in front of them?

This makes me chuckle. The idea that overtaking is unsafe is *exactly* the reason I spend so much time stuck in queues of people doing 40 miles an hour in national speed limits. The anti-overtaking culture really does show just *how low* driving ability is in this country...People just don't think..."I've come up to the car in front...what do I do now? "...the idea that they could *overtake* said car and move on up the road never crosses their pretty little minds...That's why they sit there, mile after mile, staring at the back of the car in front...

(oh...and did you mean you had to pull into the outside lane to avoid said camera, or are you overtaking on the inside?)
  • Hi this is my first post so im nt rlly sure where to put it, i was coming home at about half 10 last night and as i was coming off the bridge i saw a flash coming from my left. There was a man in a dark jacket there holding what appeared to be a camera. Would this have been a police officer, because i was doing over the limit 40 in a 30. Please someone reply soon to put my mind at ease

Don't know if it was a police officer (or more likely a traffic enforcement officer) or not but if you did 40 in a 30 then you were speeding... Only way to find out is to wait and see if you get a speed ticket...

Could be a mobile GATSO. Sits on a tripod. Works the same as a normal one. Copper takes roll of film back to the station, its processed, your registration read and the fine issued.
