Delia Smiths 'Frugal Food'

Hi, this isn't really a thread but I am so shocked I had to tell you all!! After reading that a lot of you recommend this book I went to buy it on Amazon (after all, I thought, how expensive can a book be!!). The CHEAPEST was 72 pounds fifty and the DEAREST OVER A THOUSAND POUNDS!!! I think I need a little lie down now, for that much I would expect Delia to come round with the ingredients and cook the flipping meals for me!!!

BUT on the plus side if you have a copy sell it and stop worrying about food bills. Off to try ebay now!!

Maybe you could ask for it on Freecycle? (That's my answer to everything to day!)
  • Huh?? I bought a paperback of this a few months ago, for I think around 99p?? I read in the paper that she was 're-writting' this and it would be the new Delia book!! Clever girl she is recycling too!!

I saw that on Amazon when I was researching where the cheapest place would be and thought they had to have left out some information there somewhere...

Perhaps those are signed first editions or something. It's quite bizarre as you can pick up standard copies for a couple of quid almost anywhere!

BTW, whilst on the subject - there's one my favs from the book which I make with 2 chicken thighs (to serve 2)

    Spiced Chicken with Lentils
    2 chicken thighs
    1 onion diced
    1 clove garlic minced
1 teaspoon each of ground coriander, cumin, chilli powder, ginger and turmeric
1 tin green lentils or 150g dried lentils pre-soaked in cold water for 1/2 hr
    1 tablespoon tomato puree
    250ml chicken stock

    Method:
    1. Pre-heat oven to 180c
    2. Brown chicken thighs in a pan then set aside and fry onion/garlic in the chicken fat for 5 minutes until soft
    3. Add the spices and fry for another 5 minutes before returning chicken to the pan.
    4. Add the drained lentils, tomato puree and chicken stock. Season and bring to simmering point.
    5. Pour everything into a covered oven-proof dish and bake for 45 minutes.

  • Keep checking - those prices jump around like mad. I was looking for a book for my daughter the other day and cheapest copy was £16.99 plus postage. I forgot about it and went back a couple of days later and found it for £4.20

Nice irony though. Wonder who's going to pay those prices for a frugal cook book!
