Ok Now have connected the ethernet cable. The port light is on and the coonection shows up in the network connections but still no access.

Tried ipconfig /release but it is still coming up with "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network connection while it has its media disconnected.

I am connected to the router via my pc which is connected by ethernet cable to the router and am talking to it that way.

  • did you do the renew as well?

So the PC with the wireless fault is connected directly to the router with an ethernet cable, and you can see the internet on this PC, but not wirelessly?

Are you using a second PC to write these messages?

can you post your current ipconfig /all report (from the problem PC)

is it an EasyNote G1 series, has it a built in wireless card, or PCMCIA, or usb wireless dongle?

    Try this..

    start
    control panel
    networks connections
    wireless network connection
    support
    repair
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Yes I now have the laptop connected via the ethernet cable (this is the machine I cannot get to work wirelessly) I cannot get onto the internet at all with this machine either way and therefore cannot talk to the router with this machine.

I have a second machine connected to the router with an ethernet cable which I can access to router from and get on the internet with and yes this is how I am talking to you now.

    Ipconfig report

    Windows ip configuration
    Host name - (correct)
    Primary Dns suffix -
    Node type - unknown
    IP Routing enabled - No
    Wins proxy enabled - Yes

    Ethernet adaptor Wireless network connection
    Media state - media disconnected
Description - IEEE 802.11b wireless MiniPC card 7007
    Physical address - xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx

    Ethernet adaptor local area connection
    Connection-specific DNS suffix -
Desciption - Realtek RTL8139/810x Family fast ethernet NIC
    Physical address - xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-yy
    Dhcp enabled - no
    IPO address - 192.169.-.-
    Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway -

  • ok, we are getting somewhere (I think)..

We need to sort this out first..

    Ethernet adaptor local area connection
    Connection-specific DNS suffix -
Desciption - Realtek RTL8139/810x Family fast ethernet NIC
    Physical address - xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-yy
    Dhcp enabled - no
    IPO address - 192.169.-.-
    Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway -

the 192.169.x.x is wrong (unless you have changed the router config to deliver strange addresses) (it should be 192.168.0.1,2,3, or 4)

    do an ipconfig /renew now.
then do the ipconfig /all report again to see if it picks up a 192.168.0.x number

    It should look like this:

    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.3 (or 2,4 etc
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

  • ok, another time..

the /all report will have a section for your ethernet card, and wireless, I was trying to get the wired bit working 1st, so the report will always say media disconnected for the wireless card, until we moved onto that..

    --

when you get chance, could you go into your IE router config screen (launch IE, and put in address 192.168.0.1)
then click LANIPSETUP on the left hand side, and post the details on this page

    The defaults should be:

    192.168.0.1
    255.255.0.0
    NONE
    RIP-1

Use router as DHCP server should be ticked.

    starting ip address 192.168.0.2
ending ip address 192.168.0.4 (may be a higher number than 4, poss 255, (can't remember))

if the end number is 4, you could try changing the end ip address to be 192.168.0.9, and click apply .. (to make sure that the range is big enough for the numbers of PC 's you have)

then do ipconfig /renew then release again..

The whole object of these constant renew and releases is to pick up a unique ip address (from the router) for all the pieces of equipment you have, so the range above needs to be big enough for the numbers of PC's you are attaching.

    So the router is 192.168.0.1
    PC - 1 may be 0.2

PC 2 - network card may be 0.3
PC 2 wireless may be 0.4 etc

unless you mistyped it, you said that the ethernet was now picking up 192.168.2.1, the 2 is worrying, it should be 0.., but the original 169.x.x was well out, so we are getting closer..

one other useful bit of info would be an ipconfig /all report from the working PC..

    Hello again

Have checked the settings suggested above and they are
    192.168.0.1
    255.255.255.0
    NONE
    RIP-1

Did try the ipconfig/release etc from the laptop that is not working and still will not do it as wireless media is disconnected and even though I am connected with the ethernet cable, iut will not change or release.

Situation is that wireless will not see or connect, Via the ethernet cable it will tell me that I am connected but will not let me access the internet.

I can access the internet if I use my old aol usb broadband modem with no problems.

Jus thought I would put in that when I go into the IE options and connections the wrong bit seams to be greyed out and and although there is a dot in the never dial a connection setting the add dial up button is active. Not sure if that means anything but it was the opposite way round before.

I am starting to think maybe my laptop is faulty.

    I thought you'd given up..

Doubt that it is hardware, but always possible..

This could be a dead end, but something to check.. Bridging..

    Control Panel, Network Connections.
Right-click on each Ethernet connection, check that everything is
enabled and that Bridge Connections is NOT selected. Post back with a list of what is in your network connections screen..

Also, try clicking repair on ethernet and wireless connections
