Sounds like a dns issue then, if you're connected but can't get on the internet. The ipconfig command as mentioned above is a good idea. Post back the results you get from that.

With regards to the wireless. I sued to have issues where my DG834GT would just drop all wireless activity, and not allow anything to reconnect. I'd have to reboot the router to fix it.

I got rid of my WG111T usb adapter (use internal card), upgraded the firmware, and tweaked a few settings and it's been generally ok since. I did however keep crashing within 1 minute when I was downloading the latest Battlefield 2 patch. Very baffling, had to hook up another wireless router I've got to download the file.

I am currently having this issue with my Actiontec router, have spoken to their helpline several times but am getting nowhere with it. I have been advised to keep changing channels til I find a suitable one, but as yet, I get online ok for about 20minutes and then my PC loses connection to my router. Its very frustrating and I have no idea what to try next.

Sorry to hijack, my problem is pretty similar, so I am interested in any thoughts anyone has.

Ok well I did the ipconfig /all and got the following

    Windows Ip Configuration

    Host Name ..........:(This was correct)
    Primary Dns Suffix ......:
    Node Type ............:Broadcast
    Ip Routing Enabled .......: No
    WINS Proxy Enabled ........: Yes

    Ethernet adaptor Wireless Network connection

    Media State ...............: Media Disconnected
Description .................: IEEE 802.11b Wireless MiniPC Card 7007
    Physical Address ...........: (Correct)

Not sure about much of that.

"Media disconnected" means the wireless card is not connected to the network.

Check that MAC filtering is switched off, encryption is off and the wireless card is enabled.

If your laptop has any other network interfaces, disable those temporarily.

If still not working, disable or uninstall any firewall software which may be blocking the DHCP request for an IP address.

    Thanks

  • So you have no ip addresses allocated to the card, suggest you follow the rest of the tip from:

"if your PC hasn't got an ip address in the correct range, try ipconfig /release , and then ipconfig /renew."

    onwards..

(this will attempt to allocate the correct address from the (switched on and attached!) router.

You will not be able to connect to anything until an IP address is allocated to the wireless and physical card..

Tried ipconfig /release etc but would not do it as the media is disconnected.

Could I ask you to explain (Check that MAC filtering is switched off, encryption is off and the wireless card is enabled. ) Not sure about that.

  • Can I suggest that you concentrate on getting the physically attached network card working first, then move onto the wireless issue, attach the PC physically to the router with an ethernet cable, then do ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew, then ipconfig /all (to report what happened)

The mac address / encryption settings are all related to wireless, and are changed in the router config screen (But you will never be able to get to this point until you have connected with the direct lead, so you need to concentrate on getting this working first)

  • The MAC address is the unique physical address on every network card (see physical address on ipconfig /all report). MAC address filtering is something that most wireless routers allow, to stop other unauthorised computers attaching to your router, you tell it to allow xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx and yy-yy-yy-yy-yy-yy (your PC's mac address), and disallow everything else (your neighbours).

Incidentally MAC addresses can be spoofed, so this feature will not stop a determined hacker, but is useful protection against 99% of the population.

Encryption is the scrambling of all communications with a key (63 characters), again this is the best way to secure your network from intruders, but for now, you just want to get things working, so the suggestion to disable all this protection, was to help in diagnosing the problem. If we ever get to the stage where everything is working, you then need to turn all this security back on

I took off mac filtering and encryption and still could not connect.

When you say enable wireless card I ask myself is there something very basic that I am missing. I have seen that on some machines you type fn+f1 or fn+f3 and I have tried that but with no change. It is a packard bell G series laptop.

I have never had to do anything to enable it in the past.
