I have tried the Multigrain bread mix that is on offer. I used the fastbake mode on my Panasonic, 350 ml water to 500gm mix, NO added butter - the result was the best I have ever made! Still moist after 1 day - not dry at all. Much better than the Hovis mix! I will be stocking up while it is still on offer!!!:j
Is it from ALDI or LIDL?:D

Has anyone tried the Lidl bread mixes in the Morphy Richards steel breadmaker? I have had poor results from Tesco Crusty white but the Morrisons 'Best' was really good.

    We like from Lidl:

    Turkey and pork salami
Most of the frozen fish we have tried
Most of the fruit and Veg
the 85p 'farmhouse' loaves, both brown and white
    Frikadellen
german hot dogs and german sausages
big bags of crisps, seem oddly waxy, but taste ok
    Rogan Josh curry sauce
    Most of the cheese
    Sliced meats

    From Aldi:
    vegetable crisps
Frikadellen, both kinds, the darker one is more expensive and more onion/spicy, the lighter one is more herby
    Cloudy lemonade, very citrusy!
Also got a carpet runner for just over £5 for the utility room floor :D
  • Village idiot here. I read all these reports, went to my local ALDI, thought prices were the same as Tesco, so went 300 metres down the road to Tesco and found out -
Aldi excellent big fat cucumbers are 40p cheaper than skinny Tesco cucumbers
Aldi lettuce 20p cheaper than Tesco, and bigger.
    And so on.

Guess who's shopping in ALDI in future?

while we are on the subject of prices:
when people recommend a aldi/lidl product, would it be possible to include the price? That way we can see if it is cheaper than our favourite big supermarket, as neither put prices online for comparison purposes.

I only buy the super six veg at the moment which are definitely miles cheaper than anyone else. 49p for 5kg spuds in aldi currently. And they taste perfectly fine to me.
Oh and I did buy lidl white bread flour yesterday as it was recommended (haven't tried it yet) but then I went to Asda and found that Lidl was more expensive: Lidl 75p Asda own brand white bread flour was 48p. Tesco was 68p. So this is an instance of Lidl being dearer for the same product.
I am not against lidl/aldi (haven't got a netto anywhere) but do think we need to be careful when buying stuff. They also don't seem to have the loss leading special offers that other supermarkets do.

No they are both the same size, I just checked - so lidl is definitely more expensive.

We lived in Germany for 13 years and were well used to Lidl and Aldi (when are Escher, Plus, Roller, Kaufhof, Real and all the the many other chains we loved going move over too)?

So, we were chuffed to bits when Aldi/Lidl expanded here and have made them our first port of call every since they opened nearby. Best of all - we can get our salami here now! We used to go back to Germany each year to stock up on stuff until they opened in the UK.

So, having all these new shopping converts is clogging the places up - please go back to paying over the odds in the mainstream shops. Chrikey! We've even had to go back to delegating the old retired folk in the family to go in and pick up the special offers because there's nowt left by the time we get out of work!

But when I got to be twenty one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”

  • I agree that Aldi's Mega Mouse snacks do taste nice, there's more in each bag and they are cheaper! There is a big BUT for me though:

They are clearly made to imitate Pom Bears and are also patently aimed at children. However, the salt content is more than DOUBLE that of Pom Bears so be wary when giving them to your kids.

Pom Bears have 1.5 grams of salt per 100g (0.29g per 19g bag)

Mega Mouse snacks have 3.5g of salt per 100g (0.78 g per 23g bag) which, per bag, equates to about 25% of a child's guideline daily amount of salt.

They do fare better than Pom Bears on the saturated fat content though with 0.5g per bag compared to 1.3g in Pom Bears. So, good for adults on a low fat diet then!

Some best buy snacks/treats at Aldi

    Megamouse crisps- better than Pom-bears
Romeo coconut bars covered in chocolate- could be better than bounty
fudge- very (very) sweet but addictive
hazelnut chocolate by choceur- ludicrously cheap and fantastic quality
rich tea biscuits- absolutely fine but lot cheaper than supermarket

    Also-
the mince and chicken portions are good quality

    gripes
    - although the bread is ok (some lines better than others), none of it seems to freeze well- best not to try.
If you like good butter I'm afraid Aldi's doesn't really match up.
