Great DVD Recorder Hunt

Has anyone with a liteon noticed if the mechanism spins faster (making more noise) when it has writeable media in it and slower (quieter) when it has a pre recorded dvd in it,or is it just mine, cause its very annoying.0

I don’t think they have ‘twin tuners’. If you want to record one programme whilst watching another, do it like you would with a video. Record channel 1 using the Liteon onboard tuner or Freeview/cable box. And watch channel 2 using the tuner within your TV set.

The Liteon DVD recorders (5005 or 5006) are popular for the very facility you seek. They can record on all the media you mention, plus CD-Rs as well.0 -
Thanks for the advice! I'm still in a quandry tho!
My TV picture is awful, unless viewed through my Freeview box, and I want the ability to record one channel and view another both in digital quality!
If I set to record on the LITEON via the scart from my freeview then change channel I presume it will switch and then record the new channel selected?
It would be a pain to keep remembering to use only the TV remote to change the watched channel!
The TV shopping channel IDEAL WORLD were recently offering a DVD recorder branded 'YUKAI' which, they said, had a 'TV Tuner'. The price though was £199 and didn't seem like a bargain when compared with the LITEON. I'm not a 'techie' (as you can tell) but I know from previous experience of 'CHEAP' TV/Video 'COMBI' units that they are useless, unless they have twin tuners
Maybe i'm getting the terminology wrong??0 -
I am relying on the review at:
http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/displayreview.php?reviewid=4475
for information on inputs and outputs - I'd love to know if it was wrong.
I think it was more likely out of date. The model I received from Argos had scart sockect capable of both RGB and S-Video output as well as Component connectors.
The documentation had an addendum which described these - they were omitted from the original manual!
Hope this helps.0 -

I think you were lucky. Mine has scart sockets and has the date of manufacture as August 2004. Perhaps RGB came in around September 2004. My Liteon 5005 is serial number 602433032438. Is yours a slightly newer example?
Also, can you choose RGB and S-Video from the setup (output) menu? I can't. So I don't think mine has RGB and S-Video.0 -

Couldn't tell you the serial number as I returned the drive.
Yes, RGB or S-Video output was an option from the setup menu.
Which model do you have, mine was the 5005B.0 -
I have enjoyed reading all the above threads and I am going to purchase the Liteon5005. any main advantages in getting the 5006 apart from the price?-Keep your eyes to the sunshine and you would not see the shadows-

The price of the Liteon 5006 is higher than the now-deleted 5005 so it's at a bit of a disadvantage.
The 5006 does, however, have some significant advantages, at least on paper. These include:
(1) the onboard Nicam tuner is stereo. Unbelievably, the 5005 only has a MONO Nicam tuner, not that I would use either, since I prefer my Freeview digital source.
(2) the 5006 definitely has RGB input and output for potentially (marginally) better picture quality, depending on how your TV is set up and specified.
I preferred the 5005 at £109 (Argos) when the 5006 was nearer £179. But the 5005 is currently £149 so it's a close call. If it was me, I'd wait until one or both go down in price again, perhaps in the January sales. On the other hand, I'm looking forward to recording any good films screened over Xmas!0 -
Thank you George for that. I would like to have it over Xmas but the mean side of me would prefer to await the January sales.-Keep your eyes to the sunshine and you would not see the shadows-
