They need the cheque to be written on the linked account otherwise they wont accept it.

Well, that´s what I expected! :-( Thx, noh!

I planned to visit my local branch this week anyway as I need them to certify a copy of my passport as well as providing me with an original bank statement (I am on a paperless acount at the moment and haven´t received a statement as the account has only recently been opened). I need all this for opening a share dealing account with Selftrade. Might therefore visit the branch tomorrow and check if they can help me with the money transfer to the AA as well.

I am not very optimistic though. :(

Note the cheque has to be pre printed with your name.

Unfortunately, the AA needs a cheque drawn on your linked a/c to satisfy anti-money laundering regulations (or its interpretation of the regulations)

Could you use your account with Barclays as your linked a/c?

Generally speaking, yes, I could. Hmmm, maybe I shall give the AA a call tomorrow and see, if they can change my linked account over the phone. If so, the problem with the cheque would be solved.

Thanks for mentioning this to me!

Indeed, you were! Many savings accounts require the initial deposit by cheque. Virtually all regular savers do.

There are several things without which you are a nobody when it comes to opening accounts - forget all about going green:
    1. cheque book
    2. original bank statements
    3. original utility bill

Unfortunately, this particular account requires the cheque to be drawn on the linked account. This is rather unusual.

The cheque will be ordered and each cheque have your name printed on it. This will take a good few days. They could possibly issue you a generic cheque but the AA account T&Cs explicitly require a cheque with your name pre-printed on it. Maybe the AA would accept that in conjunction with an original bank statement of your Halifax account.

Just thought I would mention the method I used to open this account.

I sent a cheque for £10 (despite the £500 minimum) with a covering letter stating I was intending to make a large investment (six figures) and was not prepared to send this by cheque. I stated that the £10 cheque was for ID and money laundering purposes and I would then do a CHAPS transfer for the full amount. I said in the letter that if this was not acceptable they should close the account and return the £10 cheque.

All the paperwork appeared as expected and I have now transferred by CHAPS direct from my Cahoot savings account and the full amount (including the £10) is showing in my AA account.

    Andrew.
  • I applied for the Internet Saver account last week when it was advertised at 7.21% but as most people already know, it has since dropped. Does anyone know if I will get the higher rate (7.21%) as that was what I applied for. I sent my cheque off today so not sure if I've missed the boat..

You will get 7.21% provided they receive the cheque by Wednesday. However, some people have been told that they have up to 14 days to deposit the cheque. (see previous posts on this thread.)

    Hi there,

Seems that I am one of the very few users on this board who have never used a cheque in their lives. :-)

Well, I moved from Germany to the UK earlier this year and my initial account I opened was with Barclays. This account is still open and I actually do have a cheque book from them but have never used it and I also have never used a cheque in Germany as paying by cheque is less common than in the UK.... it seems.

Anyway, I recently opened a Halifax current account and told them I wouldn´t need a cheque book. Boy, how wrong I was. :o Now that I applied for the AA account earlier this month, I would need one. Therefore, here are 2 questions for you guys:

1/ When I applied for the AA account, I provided my Halifax account details as my "linked account". Question: Could I use one of the cheques I still have from Barclays or wouldn´t they accept this at the AA because it doesn´t come from my linked account with the Halifax?

2/ If the cheque has to be from Halifax, what can I do? Could I walk into my local branch first thing tomorrow morning and will they be able to provide me with a cheque (book)? I will certainly ask them to send me a cheque book but doubt that I will receive it in time for making the deposit to the AA account. :(

Well, these are the moments when -as a foreigner- you realise that there are still so many things to learn in the UK. But at the same time, things like this make life so much more interesting. :)

Any thoughts, comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    DUS

You could phone or write to them and ask them to change your linked account to Barclays. Then you can deposit as many cheques as you like, provided one of them is from your linked account.

What are the AA's account details for a BACS/CHAPS transfer?
