sleepless_saver wrote:The not so good news is that the £3.50 / kilo mutton for stewing looks like a misprice as I was charged at £7 / kilo and that's what it is on the leaflet which arrived with the order. However as it's not what was on the website I am seeking a refund for the difference - no response so far by email, will phone them this week if I hear nothing.
Bummer! Yes, it looks like the diced mutton sells at £7 kg ... but the shoulder is only £3.40!Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

They have updated their web site now - pity it's a misprice but I suppose £3.50 for a kilogram of quality boneless meat was too good to be true even if is mutton. It's still half the price of lamb though so I think i will give it a go in the New year, when I will have freezer space. The shoulder of lamb (On the bone) looks like a great bargain too (hope that's not a misprice as well!) I imagine one of them would be very tasty indeed roasted very slowly on a low heat with some garlic and rosemary...sleepless_saver wrote:roast rib of beef in the oven now

.
Must try that, I usually do them in the slow cooker with garlic, rosemary, wine/stock and butter beanscompetitionscafe wrote:.....drool, that must be one of my favourite roasts of all time (top 5 would be rib of beef on the bone, loin of pork on the bone, rack of lamb with a herb crust, haunch of venison, or a really good quality roast chicken) - so, how was your beef?
Excellent, though I have had better. The real star was the pork chops which I usually find too dry/tasteless. The mutton is very good, but at £7.00 a kilo I'd prefer to buy diced game stew meats from Bower's in Stockbridge (I see you're Edinburgh as well) at £2.98 a lb.

Where from? (I am on a constant quest to find Britain's best beef.
Yes, in fact Bowers is only about 15/20 minutes walk from me - must go back there soon.Have you tried the new place [The Store] a few doors down? Have heard that their meat is excellent but not had time to try them out yet (they are not a butchers, more a general food shop, I think) - from the Scotsman: http://news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=1111&id=630652005
"Another family of north-east entrepreneurs has opened a branch of their very successful Store and Farm Shop in Stockbridge, Edinburgh.
The Store, which is located on the corner of Hamilton Place and Comely Bank Road, sells all sorts of produce from the Grampian region, and much else besides. You'll find the best bacon in Scotland there - Puddledub bacon and sausages, produced by the Mitchell family near Kirkcaldy. The beef and lamb at The Store is also well worth sampling. This meat comes from the farms of the store's owners, the Booth family. Their meat is the best. Ever. Anywhere. They will also let you try some of the dishes they have created using their meat - Aberdeen Angus lasagne is one example of what's on offer. They also sell an excellent range of wines with a bias towards New Zealand, where one of their daughters lives, running one of that country's finest restaurants.
The Store brings the best of the countryside into the heart of Edinburgh. It is one of the best showcases for top quality foods in Scotland today.""The happiest of people don't necessarily have the

Found this thread from the search engine, having just purchased a pound of stewing mutton from my local butcher £1.99 a pound. ( dont ask me for kilo's I only do 'old money' )
Im going to try the fast slow stew in my SC. Amazingly I have all the ingredients, either in the cupboard or in the garden, I think thats the first for a new reciepe.
Yum yum,
At that price it's also cheaper than the chicken we've been using for curries.
Tummy rumbling now0 -
OMG, thank youcompetitionscafe
Today my order from Moorlands farm shop arrived. I wanted to reduce my delivery cost, so I ordered Mutton mince, mutton cubes, lamb, pork and bacon. I wanted to get over £50 so delivery was only £5
I unpacked the box today, and my heart sank. To be honest, when I looked at the mutton mince my heart sank. It was very fatty. I know sheep are very fatty animals, but i was really thinking, "what the h*ll have I done".
But, we had planned to have Mutton shepherds pie this evening, although beforethe delivery arrived I had decided to do the mash separately.
I cooked the mutton with carrots, mushroom, a lamb stock cube, some cornflour, and some salt and pepper. I decided to slow cook it on the hob for about an hour (partly because we were having roast garlic as a starter, and I was s bi late putting it in).
Oh my god. It was fantastic!
Last week we had a shepherds pie made with lamb mince, and all I did was complain at the lack of flavour. This week with the mutton mince...it was fan bluddy tastic. Full of meaty flavour. I can't wait til tomorrow when we're trying mutton curry.
I can't believe how cheap and delicious mutton is. I recommend it, and moorlands to everyone!0 -
God I love mutton. And goat if you have the chance try it.
If you want mutton locally I go to a halal butchers they usually have it though it may not be very cheap!
Its hard to get goat though so will order some form moorland if I get money at xmas or if my fortunes change. lol
