Mutton dressed as lamb?

  • Nothing to do with original topic, apart from the mutton bit. Just remember Mum making pot of soup (broth or lentil) and piece of mutton in for flavouring. Think bits must have flaked of or Mum did that to leave in the soup. But the best bit was having a "piece" (sandwich) with mutton, just a bit warm. It was a total treat.
Doesn't appeal to me now (vegetarian), but for anyone that eats meat, bung in soup for stock - and try a sandwich too!
  • Yes, I might have to make some more space in my freezer before ordering so I can get it over £50 (£5 delivery) - £10 is a bit hefty! Cheapest for small orders is still www.theorganicfarmersmarket.co.uk (free delivery on orders over £30) but they don't do small on the bone beef rib roasts or on the bone (and chined) pork loin roasts or pork mince or mutton, which are all the things I want to order :(

Have you considered the Winter Warmer Box?

    Organic Casserole Beef
    Organic Minced Beef
    Diced Organic Lamb Shoulder
    Dartmoor Wild Venison Cubed
    Free Range Diced Mutton
    Joint of Organic Brisket
    Shoulder of Organic Lamb
    Happy Hogs Sausages

Approx 7.5kgs at an average £6.80 per kilo. Works out at £51. The addition of the venison pushes up the average price

Have you tried ordering anything from this company yet cc?

I'd be interested to hear what they're like, although it all looks very good on the website. Once I have sufficient space in my freezer (as I'd want to do a bulk order) I might give them a try, but it's always good to have a recommendation from someone who's actually used them first ;)

My local farm shop occasionally sells mutton, and we have eaten it roasted rare. Had a leg of mutton roasted a couple of months ago and it tasted fantastic, and was very tender. Given the choice I would always choose mutton.

I think that most people just assume that mutton will taste poor because of the phrase "mutton dressed as lamb", but I don't believe that phrase ever had any link with eating qualities.

I've ordered 4 kilos of mutton from them so will be very busy when it arrives later this week making Irish stew, mutton curry and north African mutton stew with apricots. Not to mention the beef and pork I added in to get it to over £50... I haven't ordered from them before and will let you know how I get on.

No not yet - I only found them when I was searching Google for an organic chined on the bone pork loin - will try them out when I have a decent amount of freezer space as I will probably order beef and pork roasting joints, diced mutton and beef for casseroles and curries and mince etc to get the order over £50.

Have used swaddles.co.uk for the past few years, but not too happy this week when the courier delivered my order to completely wrong address and luckily the guy (who opened it thinking it was his Donald Russel Direct order) was in and prepared to come across town and deliver it to me. However some of the frozen stuff had partially defrosted by the time I got it :( (due to polystyrene box being opened and being in a warm flat and then a warm car for a while)

Did they email to confirm a delivery date? (Wasn't very clear on their site how long it took) And can i have the recipe for the north African mutton stew with apricots, please? :) (sounds yummy!)

  • I ordered late on Sunday - they emailed on Monday to say it would be sent on Wednesday and delivered on Thursday (which I have asked to be changed to Friday)

Spiced mutton stew with apricots recipe is on the BBC website, it's one of Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's.

Or I might try the one on this page which is simpler.;)

  • Well, there's good news and not so good news:(. My order arrived on Friday, well packaged and chilled. The meat is great and we have been having a real meatfest - pork chops on Friday best ever (served with half price sweet potato from Lidl :D), made a lovely mutton curry yesterday with some of the diced mutton, roast rib of beef in the oven now and smells fantastic, other stuff in the freezer:j.

The not so good news is that the £3.50 / kilo mutton for stewing looks like a misprice as I was charged at £7 / kilo and that's what it is on the leaflet which arrived with the order. However as it's not what was on the website I am seeking a refund for the difference - no response so far by email, will phone them this week if I hear nothing.
