Mutton dressed as lamb?

I found an online Farmshop (the one where the BBC filmed 'Springwatch') who have diced/cubed mutton for less than a quarter of the price of organic lamb (yes, that's more than 75% cheaper than the lamb: £3.50 per kg for mutton and £15.80 kg for the lamb - both trimmed , diced, leg). The muttons not organic, but it is 'free-range' (aren't all sheep free range!?).
Well, I was planning to make a lamb curry (from one of the Jamie Oliver books - Pete's curry) and was thinking instead of spending a kings ransom on pucka lamb I could old style it and use mutton instead??
So has anybody substituted mutton for lamb in a curry before and was it okay?? I know mutton is less tender, but the curry has a fairly long cooking process plus all the herbs and spices... ???

In general (and IMHO) mutton tastes better than lamb - the problem is you need to cook it slower and longer. It's no good for popping under the grill and eating when the middle is still a bit pink but made for stews and currys.
I would bet a pound to a penny that in India curried mutton and old goat is the normTANSTAAFL !0 -
Thank ewe for your replies
Will give it a try and report back.
Penny Pincher the site/shop is Moorlands Farm Shop - their beef rib roast and pork loin roasts look good too - was thinking of getting either one of those for Xmas day (I am not a big fan of turkey)

Yes, I might have to make some more space in my freezer before ordering so I can get it over £50 (£5 delivery) - £10 is a bit hefty! Cheapest for small orders is still https://www.theorganicfarmersmarket.co.uk (free delivery on orders over £30) but they don't do small on the bone beef rib roasts or on the bone (and chined) pork loin roasts or pork mince or mutton, which are all the things I want to order"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the

every time i have asked any of our local butchers for mutton, I'm told they dont sell it, but it must be out there some where!!!0

the only thing you'll find is that mutton has a stronger taste than lamb
i'm only just learning to eat lamb again after years of being put off it completely because i ate mutton first!
i might be willing to try mutton again now that i like lamb
just something to considerfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0
