  • 16-17 weeks is notorious for a growth spurt where it seems as if baby is never satisfied. Hang in there and it should ease off as your supply adjusts. Obviously, it is your decision in the long run though and a few years ago when I had my first two 16 weeks was when weaning was recommended. Plenty people wean at this age and plenty more wait.

The parenting board on money saving families board is great for this sort of advice an hearing other people's stories of what they did. Come and join us!!

Thanks choca, he does seem to be getting back into a routine again now. ill come take a look at the families board. im really going to try holding ot till months for weaning.

lots of NSD's this week due to the snow. still got food in from last weeks food shopping. i think ill need another tesco delivery monday. So my last delivery lasted 10 days which im pleased with. our daily food is costing £5 for both of us.

OH has put his locum claims in which we should get at the end of the month. he has only got 2 days booked this month though. I think we will have to rent for an extra 6 months after we move to be honest, unless lots more locum becomes available. I really hope we can get enough deopsit together in time.

I'd say that if you think he's hungry, I don't think it does any harm to try him on little bits and pieces, as long as milk is his main meal. If you're not sure, you could try him on a little, and if he wolfs it, then maybe he's ready, but if he's not interested then give it another few weeks. I started Greg slightly before 4 months because he seemed to be permanently starving, and he took to it like a duck to water! When Adam was a baby 4 yrs ago, they told me that the advice had been changed on when to wean - apparently it had previously been 4 months, but they brought it down to 3 months. Now they've put it right back up to 6 months - I don't think they've got the first idea what they're talking about half the time! Shame your HV isn't much help. Have you looked at laleche.org.uk? They're supposed to be fab. I think some of the baby food manufacturer's have helplines for advice on weaning too which are supposed to be impartial, tho it's hard to say for sure!

Choca...ouch! You're a saint to put up with breastfeeding with nipple hanging off. (shuffling back to my 'bad mother' corner for giving up after 5 months)

That's great that your OH is getting paid plenty for the locum work, but a shame he's not found more for this month. Maybe more will come in at the last minute? Is he registered with lots of different agencies, or does it work differently in his job?

The butternut squash recipe sounds really good. I've never made soup before that didn't just consist of a pile of carrots, swede, potatoes and chicken stock, so maybe I should be brave and give it a go. Can I be a total dunce? Do you stick the milk in right at the start along with everything else? It's not something I've ever put in soup before!

Did you get a highchair? I've just freecycled two - d'oh! When Adam was a baby, I used the Bumbo rather than a highchair - it was comfier, more supportive and easier to clean. Greg hated it though, and was able to climb out of it so he's been in the proper chair instead. I'm going to try Greg in the Bumbo again just as soon as I can locate it in the garage, but if he doesn't take to it (I'm not expecting much!) do you want it?

It's really not my decision. Tom is an avid breastfeeder and pushes my top up if I say no. I'm getting scared that I'll still be feeding him when he's at school!!

On the weaning front im going to hold of for a bit longer. I am going to try expressing so milk and give it to him in the sippy cup he got for christmas though. He has only tried a bottle twice and wasnt too thrilled with it. I cant believe you managed 5 months panda with how difficult a time you had with it. My DS is not fussy at all when he feeds and it has been really easy since he was about 3 weeks old, If he was a fussy eater i dont know if i would have coped with breast feeding. I cant believe he is 4 months at the end of this week. He has more injections due tomorrow, i hate taking him for them.
Thanks so much for the offer re the bumbo, my mum turned up with one at the weekend though!

How many times a day are you feeding Tom choca? will you let him self wean?

For the soup recipie i put everything in at the start and just add extra seasoning if needed part way through. if you want to be really naughty though wait till its cooked, pour into a bowl then add a swirl of cream to it!

OH is in the middle of registering with a new agency, he has an interview on 17th feb then will have to wait for crb clearence to go through.

To be honest, I wish I knew. It varies! Tom's never been a very settled feeder and he's always had little and often, which firstly the health visitors said was because he was small, then a breastfeeding nurse said some babies are just snackers - I think that describes Tom. He's too nosy to feed properly and the slightest noise or movement he looks to see what's going on. His latest thing is to try and swing his legs off my knee onto the floor and feed standing up, which is insane so I spend half the time battling with him to keep his legs up. He also pinches, scratches and strokes my skin the whole time he's feeding which I've been told is affection but it doesn't feel very affectionate!

If i'm home he doesn't seem to bother feeding as much but if i'm at work he insists on doing it the second I get in. He nearly always seems to want to feed while we're out though and won't give up easily if I don't do it. He keeps rooting around and pushing my top up and whinging until I give in. He's never liked a bottle at all though he'll quite happily have water from a cup. He doesn't drink enough to keep hydrated though, but I suppose he would if I stopped feeding.

I was hoping to stop feeding at 12 months but he's showing no sign of wanting to stop. I think I'm going to ask for advice soon on how to as it's quite exhausting to be honest. But then on the other hand, when he was poorly lately it was the only thing he would take so it's reassuring that way. Plus as he still seems like a younger baby (6-9 months clothes, not yet walking and still in his first car seat) it doesn't seem like the end of the world to feed a little longer.

It's hard to know what to so!

Ooops sorry I've taken over your thread with my angst!

Sounds like a bit of a nightmare Choca, don't envy you at all with that problem. Nothing really constructive I can say - sorry! Hope the breastfeeding people have some advice, and not just that it's good to keep going as long as you can.

Good luck with the bumbo Lunar! I found mine this evening in the garage, so am going to try Greg in it again tomorrow. Ta for the tip about the soup. Must get some butternut squash tomorrow.

Hope baby's injections go ok. I'm absolutely dreading Wednesday - Adam's got his 4yr old booster(s) and he's such a little brat that there's no way of forcing him to do something if he doesn't want to. I'm expecting him to scream the place down and need forcibly held in place. You've all this to look forward to!!!
  • I have just started to wean the baby over a week ago. She was 15 and a half weeks at the time. My health visitor was supportive and thought that was the right decision too. She has only really had baby rice and pureed fruit / veg though. She is a big girl and has just weighed in at 18lb 8.5oz at 16weeks. It was getting to be a nightmare as she had gone from being very laid back to crying a lot and feeding every 3 hours. In the space of 10 days she is now herself again and last night slept through from 7pm to 5.30am this morning and is now back sleep after having her milk. What a relief!

I would trust your own judgement. I am still in awe of you guys breast feeding!

Injections all done till he is one year now. I will definatly try breastfeeding till he has the first mmr as he will still have my immunity until then. He managed well with the cup, hopefuly if he will carry on with it it will make going out easier. I think DS is a snacker too, and sometimes i have to turn the tv off as it distracts him from eating. He seems to like morning telly! I had such fixed ideas about beeding before he was born. i had planned to just stop breastfeeding at 6 months no matter what, I dont think i really thought that one through.

He is definatly not thrilled with the bumbo yet, ill try that again in another month. Ho did greg get on in his? were the injections ok?

7pm hayley? im jelous, my DS wont go to sleep before 11pm normally, last night it was 10.30 though. he does sleep till just after 9 most mornings though. DS was 13lbs 07oz at 17 weeks but seems to be really tall. He rolled over for the first time last week, ive still got him in his moses basket but dont think that will last much longer.

Im trying to catch up with everyone but ds is crying, ill try to be back soon!

  • Wow, Hayley_Jayne, she is quite big. Tom is still not quite that weight and he's 13 months next week!
