Can I just confirm that I'm right in thinking that most DVD players do not have this composite ouput? Assuming I haven't got this on mine (because I have 2 DVD players at home and neither look like they have this output) would it make any difference buying gold plated scart leads?

    Thanks in advance
You should have composite, if I remember composite is red, yellow and white, but what you should be looking for is component e.g. red, green and blue phono plug conections. If you haven't got component best using a good fullywired scart.

Basically, if your DVD player does not have this component ouput then forget it. You cannot watch DVD's. No scart lead will help. I have superb scart leads and they done nothing to help. This TV is for high quality (HD) signals, and as 90% of the UK has poor signals, then 90% of the UK will be disappointed. If you think tonys picks are ok then go for it. Personally, I like to watch TV without thinking I've taken 10 Jellies. DVI is fine, same as any other tft monitor (although you still get ghosting and poor contrasts, but you get this with any tft monitor with a 25ms response time), so if DVDs don't matter and you want a big monitor, then you might be ok.

Did not get that far, think the guy panicked and stuck me through to tech support who have still not called back even though I started at zero in queue, then 5 then 2 then told they would call back...no shock there. If it is extortionate I will sell on ebay as they are still selling for price I paid at least!
Is the tech support english, as most people seem to be having problems understanding C/S.

oh ok, thanks for the info though. Even though you can't get it from Dell's LCD TV section, if you go via the link below the TV is priced at 499 now.

No doubt I'll get some technical forum member attacking my sweeping statement about lcd technology, and I am sure you can get state of the art 8ms, super black pictures sets out there, but for £360?. I think it was worth a punt to try it out at this price.

At https://www.medionshop.co.uk, they are selling a Medion 32" LCD for £589 new. On an AV Forum, this got a massive slating for being sold as HD Ready, when it wasn't (and the pciture was poor too). Same again for the new Samsung LE26R41B LCD - people were having jagged lines all over the place when playing x-box games and more smears than a GP's clinic.

There are other folk who buy the cheap Alba 42" plasma from catalogue stores and are well happy with it. Until they see a Panasonic Viera!.

I was going to buy a 50" Sagem Rear DLP, but I could see rainbows (no-one else could of course), and it was making me feel sick. Yet other folk are paying £2,500 for this technology and happy with it.

I guess TV's are always going to be subjective and in the eye of the beholder.

My Dad bought a Tevion Widescreen 17" LCD TV last Xmas. It cost around £350! So for the same price this year I have got a 26" screen with HDTV compatibility...Unless something is SERIOUSLY wrong its a keeper.

And anyway, most people say the PC picture is pretty good so I can always hook it up to one of my computers if the TV isn't great (I already have a Dell 2001FP and that is fantastic on the PC with DVI)

Owey, what about s-video, I have that on dvd player, is that any good and do use it along with scart from dvd to tv or instead of?

Sorry I meant component!! My mistake! Am I right in thinking that most DVD players do not have the component output?

Well i have some positive news for once! (reading 10 pages of this last night before it arrived somewhat depressed me!)

Did some testing with my PC first of all, as ive had a DVI thing on my graphics card but never used - and it looked perfect! Then i stuck in a spare DVD player (via scart), and played finding Nemo, and it did have a few funny marks by the fins of the fish (from close up). BUT then i played it via the DVI on my PC, and it looked perfect! No pixelation at all! So a bit of cable fiddlign is in order i think,

But im very very impressed, it looks veyr cool, i like the Pip Pop thing The Menu is good, and the remote unit nice. It was well packed.

I havent actually tried it with normal TV yet, will do that later as i cant get to the wiring because of boxes But i know it will be a bit pixillated, but hopefully the freeview might look quite good!

    So overall im happy

This confirms the crap in = crap out theory

    DVI will look great

Looking forward to replacing my aging 21" panny CRT with this when it arrives later this week.

s-video will only carry the piture, so you would need to carry the sound from your dvd to your tv, if the tv had an optical input you could use that but I don't think it will have one. If you use a scart on most set-ups it just takes over any other set-up you have, just like a default setting. If you have a home cinema dvd set-up you could use s-video as your sound would come from your dvd speakers.

"Component is still thought to be better than s-video"

I was in Tescos last night and they had a cheap dvd player for £19.99 which had component, and also a Philips dvd at £39.97 which had component.
As its for my bedroom, and if I do keep the Tv i am going to go for the Philips dvd as it looks better than the other and its a big name, should have no problem with that.
