Saving By Ignoring The "Offers"

Sorry. I have just come off of the ASDA site, doing an online shop. For the past several weeks I have noticed some very non-saving special offers in both ASDA and Tesco (haven't been to Sainsburys for ages).
This time it was the ASDA own brand Shreddies, called Malted Wheaties. The offer is for two of the 750g boxes for £2. Or you can buy them for 98p each. Now I realize this is only 4p on the two boxes but . . . . . I have seen other cereals (usually own brand), biccies, bacon, feminine "needs", toothbrushes, tinned pasta and carrots with the same sort of pricing 'offer' lately and was wondering if anyone else had noticed any of these great buys??
It must work to draw some purchases as I'm still seeing it happening!

I have just got back from Asda, don't like to go at all, never mind the Sunday chaos, especially when there are special offers on, but I had no frozen peas and wanted some with the chicken casserole for dinner.
Decided to get some strawberries. I only wanted one punnet, but they were 2 (300g each) for 3 pounds, so was going to get 2, then I noticed the next section were 454g for 1.98. Struggled with the mental arithmetic, the 600g for 3 pounds was OK, but how does that compare with 454 for 1.98? Just bought the one, and think I was right.
Managed to get some of the 50p offers though, butter for baking, carrots and onions as I had just used the last of them in the casserole, and the inevitable bananas as the warm weather has made the ones I bought the other day almost ready for banana cake.
Definitely beware of the offers.

Hi kadeeae,
As your thread has dropped down the Old Style board I've moved it across to the Shop but Don't drop board so that others can see it.

If you use asda online or any of the super markets for that matter go through www.mysupermarket.co.uk they make you aware of items that work out cheaper than the offers and allow you to swop your items before going to the check out you collect ipoint on eachshop as well0

The other week Asda had on " offer " Walkers crisps, 2 for £5. I think, not sure that there were 26 in a bag.If i bought 1 bag i`d pay £2.99 ! no way ! I`m sure a 26 bag of crisps cost so much.0

and always, always, always check the price per litre or per kg.
I often notice that all shops and supermarkets make mistakes here and it can be much cheaper, surprisingly, to buy several smaller quantities than one large quantity.
I have seen this in Sainsbury, tesco and waitrose. I wouldnt shop in Asda unless everywhere else was closed.Keep trying.........................what else is there to do?

I was just so amazed that the lack of any 'true' offer was so blatant!
myusernamehasgone - I was on mysupermarket - pulled up the page for cereals and saw the 2 for £2 and right (directly!) next to the "offer" price it said for the normal price 98p each. So I ended up buying just the one, because if I had bought 2 they would have charged me the "special offer" price of a £1 a box.
nuttywoman - but in your case the "offer" price would have been the bargain, working out to £2.50 per bag. With the cereal "offer" the bargain was the normal price with the "offer" working out to more ££.0 -

I almost never used to check the price per kg/litre/100g, but I definitely do now! Previously I thought that the bigger pack was always the better buy, I've since learned that isn't so as a rule.0 -
The other week tesco had a litre of robinsons squash for 80p - or two for £1.80 :rolleyes:0

The funniest one I have seen in Waitrose was
Robinson Squash 1 Litre 3 for £2 and below a 3 litre bottle that was priced as £2.72Buy for value not cost.
Feb Grocery = £55.87 / 800 -
