Garmin Nuvi. These have Navteq maps which have the best coverage for Northern Ireland.
  • I agree, for people in NI its the map provider thats most important and navteq seem to have the best coverage. I got my garmin 3 1/2 years ago and even when new, all but the most recent new builds were covered. Garmin seems to be the best balance of price / maps and reliability. Amazon have good deals every so often.

Avoid tom Tom as they don't have complete mapping for NI. Garmin best.

Have a garmin Nuvi for a few years and it does the business, although there's a few things you should be aware off. From time to time it will send you on the by-roads and it doesn't take kindly to setting destinations while on the move.

Tom Tom shows my area as forestland- hasn't been for 60 odd years! :)

Garmin actually not much better with my own area either to be honest, but I know where I live, so don't think I'll have a problem.

Friend went to Halfords, there was a Tom Tom rep giving a spiel about how great the latest range was. Friend went up to salesman, pointed at a car in the carpark covered in Tom Tom stickers and asked was it his. Of course it is sir! We are Tom Tom after all. With a big grin.

My friend then asked why, if Tom Tom was wonderful, why did the salesman have a Garmin on his dash?

Cue a possible day with limited sales.....

I've been using Sat Nav apps on my mobile phones for a few years now and have always been impressed by their accuracy here and abroad. I've recently changed to an android phone and have come across Waze, it's a community based completely free sat nav app.

The local maps will take time to build up so I'll still use the Navigon and Co-pilot apps for some routes, but the really nice feature of Waze is that for the popular routes (i.e. my dily commute)there are loads of traffic reports from other local people using Waze.

    Worth considering imho.
