I checked my garmin details which were registered in December last year. An updat eof the mapping systems will cost me £59.99 for my Nuvi 300

here's more on that Free Garmin update. you have to register within 60 days of first receiving satellite acquisition. Garmin also says 'Anyone who first used their new Garmin nüvi or zūmo on August 17th or later will be eligible for a free map update if one exists within 60 days of the unit's first use.'
Here's a wee bit more on it. It would appear there may be a few hiccups along the way.
We recently registered my dad's 'old' C510 for him (which he'd owned for at least 2 years) and they sent him the latest maps in the post.
He must have paid for them though? was it the 2009 maps?0 -
Looks like they've changed the Terms of their map guarantee very recently - it didn't used to have a time limit, other than excluding models which are no longer supported (ie those for which they no longer do software updates) and units which had been previously registered or were second hand.
From that link you posted, it looks like a very recent change - will have a look on www.pocketgpsworld.com and see if they're talking about it on their forums.
EDIT: Yes, it looks like it happened at the beginning of October - and there have been MANY problems with people finding that their 'brand new' satnav has been switched on and registered satellite lock several months ago, resulting in no free map update being available!!
The C510 updated maps we got were free - I requested them.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

Have you any idea what Garmin's position is on this? According to the info on the link I posted from gps-data-team.com, people got the free update after proving date of purchase, but these things are never as simple as they sound.0 -
I've been reading online and viewing a few vids on youtube and it seems the Garmin tells you to turn left or right about 200 yrds before the turn, has any Garmin users noticed this? The Tom Tom seems to be better in this department by telling you that the turn is approaching and then directing you to turn left or right just a few yards from the turn, has any users compared the two devices on this matter?
My Becker sat nav prompts at 400yds, 200yds & at the turn & it uses navteq maps the same as garmin but sorry i can't speak for any other make...What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!0 -
Brian, have you the one with lane assist?0

Brian, have you the one with lane assist?
The version i have is the Becker Traffic Assist Highspeed 7934, bought it from Tescos for £54 a while back when they were getting rid of old stock...:j :j
Not too sure what lane assist does but i know that when driving on multi lane motorways etc this one will tell me to keep to the left/right so as to avoid lots of lane changes at the last minute...What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!0 -
i want to buy a satnav for my folks for christmas but it needs to have good coverage of france - I went to halfords today and tried the nuvi 250 which i'd had my eye on. Unfortunately it didn't have some of the villages in France that i needed. Tried a tomtom one v4 europe and it did have the coverage I needed. I wonder was the nuvi in halfords old stock (tomtom's a lot dearer), does anyone know where i could go and test one out with the latest mapping on it?0

the tope, try out a Garmin 265, Europe maps, it's says the name of the street you're turning onto, instead of just left/right which would be handy in rural N.I and France where two road ends may be close together, tell us if it's any better at picking up addresses than the 250?
have you any idea why Tom tom is bad for N.I, but works fine in France?0 -
My Garmin match's my home address ok but reckons i live 2-300 yards up the road
As i know where i live it's never been a big problem.
Finds most other address's ok and gives plenty of warning of turns. IIRC you can set the distance before a turn that it gives you the warning and then get a final instruction just before the turning.
