Does anyone know how to stop silent cold calls from overseas? I've been getting a ridiculous number of calls from +390245901067 every day - I think it must be a Call Centre as I can hear lots of talking in the background, although no-one has ever actually spoken to me.
I've had 10 calls today and a further 12 over the weekend

Get a call blocker or call blocking phone.

Sounds really interesting. Please could you hold the line while I block your number?

I had one of these calls at 2:30am!!!

The only time I expect a call this time of the day is when a relative has died or taken to hospital.

I always tell them to get lost.

We get several telephone calls a day from illegal marketing organisations who ignore the Telephone Preference Service, but I've found this easy way to get rid of most of them.

Remember most of these are generating by automated call makers that dial a number, wait for the phone to be answered and then check that there is someone talking on the receiving end. If the software does not detect anyone talking it silently terminates the call after about 6 seconds.

So all you have to do is when you pick up the phone is to say absolutely nothing and wait for 6 seconds. If there is a real person, friend relative etc on the other end they are bound to say "Hello - are you there?" otherwise there is a click and hey presto - no more junk call!

I have a Calling Line Identity display, and I always do this whenever I get "International Caller" or "Number Withheld", but regardless of this you will find that you won't miss any calls from people using a normal phone who ring you directly.

So long as you have a phone with caller ID the easiest way to deal with these calls is simply not to answer them. Absolutely no need to buy special equipment.

If the call is important they'll leave a message. If it's someone you know they'll probably be in your contact list and their name will be displayed.

By answering the phone you are perpetuating the problem because your number will now be recognised as a 'live' number, be added to yet another list to be sold on to the next would-be scammer.

    Just stop answering the calls.

Quick question to everyone on this thread: which is more useful?

    a) Ofcom/TPS/telephone companies/government
    b) A tub of radioactive, stinky, lard
