I am bombarded with pain-in-the-backside calls which I know originate from BT giving my number out as the name that they ask for has only ever been registered with them!
Our village were so fed up with abysmal broadband they went to a company called Gigaclear who installed up to 1Gb symmetrical fiber to every house. They charge £37 per month.
I then switched to Vonage VoIP telephone for £6 per month. So a total of £43 plus calls to mobiles and 084 etc numbers. Overall slightly dearer than I was paying BT, but infinitely better. Others in the village with different phone requirements / usage have made considerable savings.
Gigaclear use the Cable and Wireless fiber optic network, not BT's, so we are now completely independent of BT.

The Information Commissioner is already investigating Scottish Power and will hopefully fine them soon if they continue to get reported.

See http://ico.org.uk/enforcement/action/calls

You can report Scottish Power to the ICO to encourage them to impose a fine for making these unwanted calls by making a report using the Report your concerns >> link at https://www.ico.org.uk/complaints/marketing/20

Ironic isn't it: A
I was really looking for a way to complain about teleohone companies who are happsy to take money for connecting a gang of fraudsters operating using a spoof telephone number 0091148.
Don't what ever you do have any dealings with this fraudulent firm. Under no circumstances give then any information. You are already on the "suckers list".

Bogus TPS Calls

The Telephone Preference Service is completely free to consumers.

TPS will not call a subscriber of the service to ask for personal details or payment to complete a registration.

If you have registered via the web and have received an e-mail confirmation and clicked on the attached link, that's it! Your number will be registered for FREE with TPS.

We will not contact you again in relation to your registration (unless you have number(s) registered with the Corporate TPS, where we will contact you annually by email to renew your subscription - this is still a free service).

If you do receive a call from someone claiming to be from the TPS or a similar sounding organisation, asking for personal information or charging you for this service, our advice is to not pay or give them any personal details, it is most likely a scam.

We are aware of a number of organisations that call from overseas, possibly India claiming to be TPS or affiliated with TPS or BT. They ask for your credit card details to complete a registration to stop unwanted calls. They often claim that you previously gave your permission for this call. This is a scam. Never give out your credit card details over the phone.

The names of some of these organisations, given to us by consumers are:

Alien Touch
SAIS Corp Ltd
Icon Global Services
IG Services
ITC
Biztek (or Bisdek) Telecomms
Consumer Advice Bureau

- our advice is NOT to pay them.

Beware of Unregulated Companies Charging For Their Service!

There are other companies that are not necessarily scams but they are not TPS. They usually claim to offer a similar or even an enhanced service to TPS.

They make exaggerated claims about the effectiveness of their service and may even suggest that TPS does not work.

Some of these companies are listed below:

CPR Global (previously known as the Call Prevention Registry)

Opt Out UK

Anti Marketing Group

The Advertising Protection Agency (TAPA)

No More Marketing

The Nuisance Call Registry

IPC Intelligent Protection For Consumers

Call Prevention Service

TPS-Register.org.uk
http://tpsregister.org.uk/

Secure Telephone Service
http://securetelephoneservice.co.uk/

All of the above are commercial organisations, all of which charge consumers for a service that is unregulated.

TPS is the only official Opt Out service that companies are required to abide by under the UK law and that is regulated by Ofcom and enforced by the Information Commissioners Office (ICO).

If you have any information on these types of companies (phone number, web address), please send details to tps@dma.org.uk

• has anyone ever had the call from number ~ 000000
i would love to stop that one!

Many, in fact most of the scam companies are abusing VOIP telephony services, and using what is known as 'Caller IDentification Spoofing' - they can have their number displayed as anything they like, even, if they wanted to, your own telephone number.

Chances are, that call was from a scam IT Support caller.

I have a youtube channel dedicated to many of these scam calls, with recordings of the calls, and how I deal with them successfully,

I have calls recorded from this particular number, and hosted on my youtube page. Search on google, or youtube for 'calls4u2'

The above will give you a giggle, and you'll see how to deal with these nuisance callers successfully.

I'd post direct links, but this forum doesn't let me :/
Enjoy :)

No madam, I am the butler to the Smith Family.
Please give me the reason for your call and your Company's name and I will transfer the call to Mr Smith.....Ping

Now consider where these morons get our details from.
My Council sells details of our Electoral Roll to any buyer.
Since asking 192.com to remove any reference to me, which they did, I have had NONE of these abusive overseas calls.

Like most readers I got 10-12 calls over the full 24 hour period.
Now I can sleep undisturbed all night.

If there's the second's delay due to the automated phone switcher, I use that second to hang up!

I've tried lots of things......mumbling incoherently, saying yeah yeah yeah, putting them on loudspeaker while I carry on with my life.

I think I've had fewer calls since I explained to them that I was taking a dump, with various squeezing noises, or having a tommy tank and would they mind talking dirty to me. I think both of those they must have reported to their superior and got me taken off their lists.

I had the 'out of area' call about an accident - I think they are a compensation company using an overseas centre - as soon as I heard the word "accident" I launched into the 'anxious mother' routine, demanding to know who had been hurt, when, which hospital etc etc

The caller tried to stick to the script so I asked if they were the police, from the hospital or an ambulance man and again asked for the details so I could get to my injured son who was out in his car ... I then castigated the caller for playing unkind jokes on me and told him never to ring .

DH was crying with laughter :o
