  • Morning all

Isabella Molly is a week old today, and is asleep next to me on the sofa (attempts to move her back to the crib and get back to bed myself have NOT been a success this morning!!), so it seemed like a good idea to come check in with you guys now I've graduated from the pregnancy thread!

Jumping in with both feet - DH went out and bought some dummies on her first day, and I had to "prove" to him using one of the hospital leaflets, that we can't give it to her until she is 4 weeks old. I don't know if she will want it or not, but reducing the risk of cot death seems a good plan to me. I'm definitely in the "only in bed" camp with them though. My nephew insisted on having his dodo till he was about 7, and that's put me right off them for daytime use!

I'm sure we will end up with some kind of comfort toy - I still sleep with Edgar the elephant (it used to be a knitted scarecrow I'd had since I was tiny, but after being darned several times, he is now retired to the bedside table!), so she can't really complain on that one. All the stuffed toys she has so far are bigger than her though, so they're not going in the crib or there would be no room for baby ;)

    Congratulations ladybirdintheuk!

Dummies are the bain of my life at the minute. When Henry is at nursery they only use them for naps but when he is at home he tends to want it 80% of the time. Trouble is that I decided to get the Tommee tippee ones that are now discontinued and can cost £20.00 for 2 on ebay! He is always losing them cos he too uses them as a toy aswell as a dummy. I do remember HV saying that I should cut it out and I do try to especially as he doesnt have it at nursery.

He also has a muslin square as a comforter and has no real attachment to any toys. He's not overly bothered about it though and tends to want it when he is tired. My sisters 2 kids still have theirs and they are 8 and 4!!!!

Side note: Guys to me this thread is an opportunity for everyone to share their experiances. What may work for one of us wont work for someone else but I think it is interesting to see what other real life parents do rather than books. Daphne please come back, not sure what went on but I also say that everyone is entitled to their opinion and should also respect that someone may have a different one to you.x

PS sorry for the long rant.
Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.

re: dummys and SIDS. I thought the research showed that if a baby never had a dummy to go to sleep then it didnt make any difference if they didnt have one. however if a baby usually went to sleep with a dummy then it was best to keep giving him/her the dummy to sleep with as that helped prevent SIDS. And also the research was sponsered by a dummy manufacturer!

Lu T - i'm a bit of a contradiction too - hate dummys bt did try one after a month. luckily he didnt like it and i breathed a sigh of relief cos i know i would hate giving it to him if he had liked it

Agutka - think the majority of mums dont like dummies but hey if it works it works and if it gives parents a bit of extra sleep well then what can I say! (but i still dont like them ;) )

Ladybird - good morning! and how lovely to have a newborn all snuggled next to you!

And Oz's comfort toy appears to still be my boobs :rotfl:

  • Ds has always had a muslin in his crib or cot, and it's another signal that it's now nap time - he likes pulling it over his face! He recently (about 3/4 month ago) really took to a little cuddly rabbit we bought in Ikea. It now lives in his cot, on a permanent basis, because it doesn't like leaving his bedroom...;). The rabbit was £2, and there are two spares currently camped in my wardrobe just in case...

I think we're the same person nadnad! (Although herself is a bit small for comfirt objects to be fair!) When Celia was tiny tiny so many people (particularly my MIL) told me she needed a dummy. So we tried one, she sucked it for about ten seconds, then spat it out and gagged whenever it came near her again! Maybe she didn't need one after all! Some do, she didn't! It would seem it has to be people for her! She's teething now and given the choice she'd much rather knaw my finger to the bone than battle with a teething ring!

(btw thank you so much to whoever recommended Ashton and Parsons!)

Congratulations on the birth of your son.

Have you made sure that his penis is pointing downwards when you fasten the nappy? You also need to close the nappy reasonably tightly - close one side, pull the other side almost closed, check postioning of his penis and then fasten second side.
Out of curiousity what nappies have you tried?

hi, this happened with both my boys. like the other poster said make sure his penis is downwards, but it will probably still keep happening no matter what. i too tried lots of different nappies. i just used to make sure that i had clean clothes and bedding to hand when it happened in the night and after a few weeks it seemed to stop and hasn't happened since. Bit of a pain having to change baby completely and change bedding at night though. Good luck
    now mum of 4!!!

make sure his willy is pointing down and also that the outer leg cuffs aren't tucked into the nappy
