when we were younger my mum and dad decided to get a family dog as our neighbours dog had just had puppies (a lhasa apso...can you tell I love them!) anyway my mum has allergies also and what she did was handle the pups and their mum etc and she deliberatley rubbed her eyes to see if there was going to be any reaction. Nothing. We got Bonnie at 8 weeks and had her for 14 amazing years.
Just patting a dog might not be enough, make sure you touch your face and eyes etc so there is no reaction....sorry if I am stating the obvious here
I can pat a dog and be ok, the minute I touch my face I start scratching and can come out in a rash.0 -

Yes it is near to us thank you but having looked on there adoption list they dont have they type of dogs that i am looking for. I have also looked on the rspca website for places within a couple of hours and they dont have any dogs suitable either.0

Thats how i am sometimes when i touch my face after petting some dogs thats why i made a fuss of these dogs and touched my face after. I am going to go and see someone who has one of these dogs so i will find out then for sure.0 -
So now you have found your breed, you need to find your breeder
A good breeder is one that loves his/her dogs and is fiercely protective of where the pups are going. Dont forget the pups are a reflection of him/her so a good breeder is going to want the best of homes for their pups - so expect and welcome the nth degree
Expect to be asked about what experience you have of dog ownership. The family make up. Who will be main carer. What type of home you live in. Do you have a fenced garden. Where will the dog be walked. how many hours will the dog be left alone. What plans do you have in place for training, vets, insurance etc etc etc.
If these or similar questions are not being asked of you - then walk away.
Similarly have your questions for the breeder - the breeder should be able to answer everything about the breed. Check for yourself what health checks are recommended and then see if the parents were checked before mating. Is the breeder endorsing the pup to stop any future litters being registered at the KC?. Will the breeder take back the pup at any time in the future if things dont work out ( all good breeders will btw) How old will the pups be before you can visit and how old will they be before you can pick one up (pups should be around 4/5 weeks before being handled by strangers and 8 weeks before old enough to leave home)
The best place to find good breeders is through the breed club - ring the secretary of the areas close to you and speak to them. Do expect to spend a lot of time on the phone making friends with these people. The more people you are in touch with and become known by the more chance you have of getting your perfect pup
Talking of perfect pups - The Perfect Pup by Gwen Bailey is a MUST for all new puppy owners imo0 -
it may well be worth contacting the specific breed rescue too and considering an adult dog - much less work and stress for the first year, especially as you are a working family!0

ooh if you are keen on a pup.... I just spotted this tiny pup - poodle x yorkie so I would imagine likely to be as ok allergy wise as anything! Winter, third dog on the page

How cute are them dogs, even the westie is adorable. It says its not up for adoption yet and its a long way from us being in bristol but I will keep looking at the site thanks.0 -
yeah, I know it is a long way, but in my opinion it really is worth travelling to find the right dog as you will probably spend the next 15 years with it!! However, Bristol is probably about as far away from North Yorkshire as possible, so not an easy option!:D
I will keep my eyes and ears open - I could always post on dogpages and see if anyone has or knows of any dogs available that meet yout criteria if that would be useful? So far, I understand you are looking for small-ish, young-ish (puppy?) and most importantly non-shedding?0 -

Yes thats right, but I really need to be able to meet the dog aswell before I make a decision. I dont want to take a dog home and find that i am allergic to these dogs afterall.0
