Which 37" tv for me?

Get Digital Video Essentials from HMV for £4.99 rather than the THX ones, as they are specific to the film they come bundled with. I've found DVE to give a good calibration, well, as good as you can do by eye..
Intriguing
I use a Monster set up disc myself ~ but thats 20 quid
Whats the difference with the HMV one Ane?
Your statement is wrong though im afraid. THX set ups are ALL the same. Theres no difference from disc to disc and calibration of both Contrast and Brightness is perfect (I checked with a pro set up disc):idea:0 -
Just bought my old man a 37" Panasonic plasma. Tis awesome. Got it from John Lewis, so 5 year warranty as well.0

No, not all THX set ups are the same, it even says on the THX Optimizer website that:These test signals allow you to match the reference levels used during the DVD mastering process – giving you the exact sound and picture presentation that the filmmaker wanted you to experience.
Therefore, since all films are going to be mastered differently, the THX Optimizer is not a blanket solution.0 -

Im sorry Ane but ur wrong. NOWHERE does it say each THX setup is 'different'. the THX system is an EXACT specified audio and visual quality. Its what THX IS! If there was ANY variance then the whole point of THX would be BS!
Sorry mate ~ I absolutely HAVE to dissagree with you there. And ALL my THX set ups discs are EXACTLY the same I assure you.
And Ill quote the left hand side of that very page ~
"The simplest and least
expensive way to
calibrate a TV is to use
the free THX Optimizer
on any THX-Certified
DVD"
You cant MISS calibrate a tv. Its either calibrated, or it isnt! Theres no half way point.:idea:0 -
THX is a set of guidelines that if adhered to gain certification which concentrates on the dynamics and audible properties of a room and system being used. There is also conditions that must be met for the projection equipment and brightness, but THX i audio set of guidelines that introduces guidelines for viewing angles and projection criteria for movie theatres.
Of course they're going to use a positive comment like the NY Times one, it'll help convince people to buy their DVDs!You cant MISS calibrate a tv. Its either calibrated, or it isnt! Theres no half way point.
I bet yours is miscalibrated.
The human eye cannot accurately calibrate a display, that's why professionals who deal with calibration use Colorimeters to give accurate results.0 -

I havnt paid anyone to do a FULL service menu caibration (at 300 quid or so I thought a tad too steep).
BUT ~ ive had it checked out with a professional bluray calibration disc and its as good as is possible with the settings I CAN set (Which is also how I proved the THX discs calibrate). My Contrast, Brightness, Sharpness and Colour cant be set any better than it already is. And trust me ~ the pro calibration disc is EASY to set, even if you have bad eyesight!
I understand how you may be a bit against what they have on their site but I assure you that I KNOW my av stuff (Certainly more than most people). And yes, whilst the rooms 'acoustics' play a part, invariably MOST people have to live in them too (mine included)
I kind of fail to see how you put such faith in a 'music shops' setting dvd as opposed to a world renowned companys disc! Im not saying theres anything wrong with it (Ive never seen it), I just dont see how you can knock THXs settings! People build amplifiers into the tens of thousands with the exacting THX specs in them!
Plus, what your bringing up there is really more for hifi forums as opposed to a basic 'money' forum.
Still, appreciate that theres a fellow 'hifi' enthusiast in the house:idea:0 -
I think we've taken this waaay off track, so to sum up what I was saying and to leave it at that;
The THX disc is better than no calibration, but there are better discs out there if you want to get the best out of your gear.
End.
It does amaze me actually at going to people's houses who've invested £1,000+ on a tv and they're so bright you can still see the picture three days later.0 -

Well sort of
The THX discs are FINE for setting Contrast, Brightness and Sharpness in a NORMAL persons home
And yes I totally agree, for some reason people have contrast WAY up. Unbelievable............:idea:0 -
