  • And where, may I ask, might one purchase a 37" CRT these days?

hmmmm but then again, my lounge isn't going to be massive and I want a 37" screen, problem might be that from my viewing distance an lcd would look poor in standard def - where as a crt or plasma might even be better for my circumstances

If you just want SD, go and haggle over a new CRT set, there are some amazing bargains to be got on these now.

You will get a much better SD picture on a CRT than on LCD or Plasma, and at a fraction of the price - fact !

    37"??

It would be VERY big and VERY heavy,....fact

Also, Im not convinced it WOULD be as good as a Panasonic plasma actually!

VERY TRUE! We went from panny 32" crt (big/heavy) to the px37. Different sort of picture but the plasma is better, no problems with sport etc...would definitely recommend, think it is on Amazon for £579 at the moment.
  • We not long ago bought a 42" samsung plasma, its not the 1080 one, its the 720x1068.

Its great, and picked it up for £560, though a few weeks later it was up for £500 in Comet.

    Shop around.. :)

I spent some time in John Lewis very recently actually comparing two Panasonics, one LCD & one plasma. The staff there were incredibly helpful, even disconnecting the HD feeds from a DVD player and running an SD aerial feed for me. Try getting Currys or Comet to do that !
I have to say that the picture quality on both sets on SD was not as good as my CRT JVC - even the salesman admitted that was "probably" the case.
I recently moved house and I know how big and heavy the CRT machines are. My JVC is so old the screen size is measured in cubits or groats or something !

I made the decision to stay with SD and my CRT until there is a lot more free HD around.

PS: The best picture I saw there was on a Samsung - it was almost three-dimensional.

    Thats a fair comment.
However, my Pioneer 42" plasma absolutely trounces my 32" AND 28" Philips CRT tvs in EVERY way(But then Pioneer plasmas are considered the best in the world).
Also, Plasmas in particular need LOADS of 'running in' before they are at their best so I would hazard a guess the one you viewed in the shop wasnt and on top of that it makes a HUGH difference what theyre plugged into (Meaning the shop probably uses very poor 'mains extensions').
What im basically trying to say is if you had the Panasonic plasma at 'your home' and used it for 6 months it would almost certainly beat your CRT for picture quality.
