  • Is it ok to put my pan rests and burners from my gas range cooker in the dishwasher?
I dont know why but i seem to have it in my head that i should not ?
Not sure about the burners but my cooker book said NOT to put the pan rests in the DW. Think they might be cast iron as they are heavy? They're awkward to clean as they have a rough surface so I try to give them a daily wipe to keep on top of things.

As far as i know, the only difference between self raising flour and plain flour, is SR flour has a small amount of salt and baking powder added.

Myself, when i make fairy cakes, i use SR flour, and baking powder combined and never had a problem

Also , the carrot cake i make uses SR flour and Bicarb of soda - and it is perfect!

There is always a slight chance it could go wrong, but i would risk it! Good luck!

Let me know how you get on, that recipe looks yummmy!

I managed to pick up some plain flour so didn't get to try. I'm sure it would have worked out though - actually it probably would have been better as the cake didn't rise much! Thanks a lot for the reply.

Bread making without salt? Is it possible? I have no salt in the house as I decided to cut it out of my diet but want to start making bread and pizza bases. Does the salt in these recipes really make that much difference to the outcome? Or could I add a little bicarb instead? Thanks!

I'm sure I have done so. I definitely don't put in anywhere near as much as they say.

I always make bread with a lot less salt than is required, e.g. 3 g instead of 12 g. Tastes good to me? I think if you missed it out completely the bread would be a bit bland but if you've largely cut salt out of your diet then perhaps you won't notice.
  • I read somewhere that baking powder is good for cleaning the oven - anyone know if you sprinkle it on a cold or warm oven?
