I peel, chop, throw in a pan, if they are bakers/bramleys, then I add a wee bit of sugar, but we like a tart taste. You can always add more sugar when cooked
Put lid on pan and put on low heat, give them a wiggle or a stir and they will cook in no time.

  • Are there any good offers about for washing powder at the mo? Or recommendatins for Lidl/Aldi? Woudl it be worth joining Costco/Makro and stock up there? It would have to be a good saving as it's a bit of a drive for me.

My 3 large boxes of Persil have finally come to an end. I bought them with the 75% off coupons in Tesco - absolutely months ago!

Have a look at www.fixturefrerrets.co.uk You pay a minimal subscription--think it coulds be £5 a year--& you can look at special offers in around 10 supermarket chains.

There's also www.mysupermarket.co.uk where you can see & compare all sorts of prices for the big four.

Also look on the "Value Things I Have Tried & Liked" & "Whats Great In Lidl/Aldi" threads that are on the board somewhere :o ..sorry but still can't manage the links to those....

Or make your own laundry supplies from soda crystals & borax :D

I've just found green/grey mould on the outside of 3 un-opened bags of flour that have been stored in my cupboard...would I still be okay using the flour or will I have to throw it away? The flour is feeling rather solid as well.

*wanders off to put some open pots of salt into the cupboards to try and do something about the damp in them*

I wouldn't. I've been known to cut mould off a block of cheese but I wouldn't use the flour. I would use it if it was out of date but looked OK, but wouldn't use it mouldy eeven if in date.

I haven't got a 'proper' kitchen now and have bought lock and lock boxes to put flour in. I did stock up on half price granary flour a few weeks bag but generally now have stopped storing anything that could spoil, flour being one of them. I just have one bag of each on the go, in the plastic box.

Edit: have just googled and seems that mouldy flour can be caused by flour beetles. So, confirms my initial thoughts! Would check for critters in the cupboard too:- http://www.the-piedpiper.co.uk/th7a.htm
