Quick Question - can you blanche and freeze leeks?

edit: forget that lol, found this,

Remove tough outer leaves, wash remainder. Cut away green part of stem, slice white flesh or cut in half lengthwise. Blanch 2 minutes if sliced and 3 minutes if cut lengthwise. Chill in iced water 2-3 minutes. Drain and place on tray in a single layer. Freeze for 30 minutes. Transfer to freezer bags, remove air, label and seal. Keeps for 6 months

Or you can just slice and freeze, as I do, for shorter storage.

My question is about "shortening". I've just come across this in a recipe for a bread, a very fatty one, and was wondering if I'd be able to use butter. To be honest i've never heard of shortening before but understand it's some kind of fat?
    thanks x

    Hi Lizalu,

Hope it's not too late for you. Yes you can use butter instead.

This thread might help: vegetable shortening??

Google 'shortening baking' for the full technical answer, but yes, it looks as if you could use butter instead.

    Sorry, missed pink's answer ...

Bought a bread maker from Lidl at the weekend and have a problem. The bread rises brilliantly when proving but by the time it has baked it has flattened out, and on one occasion was even concave. The bread tasted okay but I guess I am doing something obviously wrong  Any advice please?

Dont worry about the dough looking a bit wet...it should be fine! Dont forget to put the raisins in when it beeps;) .
I would wrap the spuds in foil so you can take them from freezer , defrost on worktop or in fridge and put in oven with no fuss:D

    Hi,
What can I do with cooking apples, other than crumble, pie, apple sauce ?
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, otherwise might just make some stewed apple or apple pie for freezer- does stewed apple freeze/defrost well ? If I were to make some for 16 month old DS is it better to use brown sugar than white to sweeten it ?
    Thanks a lot,
    OS
