Yeah it's something i've wanted to try as I always have packs of dry beans knocking about. You've reminded me, I must sort some chickpeas out andget them in the freezer!

i think you can make hummous with any kind of bean can't you?

How many of you are there and what is your current budget?

You could try lots of different methods to get your food shop down-such as bulking out, batch and freeze, down grades or take up one of the challenges. Meal plans are the way to got for budgeting, if you give a little more info on what you currently spend/what your goal is, I am sure lots of lovely posters here will be glad to help :D

Doing a cupboard inventory this morning and OMG! I didn't realise that I had so much stuff, especially cleaning gear.

    Anyway, I have two questions.

    1) Have had a whole chicken in my freezer for 18 months - is there anything I can do with it, or is it best to bin it?

    2) Found a packet of Jacob's Cream Crackers in the cupboard that have gone a bit soft - are there any recipes that I could use them in so that I can avoid wasting them?

    Thanks in advance :o

    Hi libgysig,

    Welcome to Old Style :)

Frozen food can't go off but the quality can deteriorate over time and if it's not wrapped well it can get freezer burn, which again only affects the quality. Producers tend to err on the side of caution with their recommended freezing times, but most foods will be perfectly safe to eat no matter how long they've been in the freezer.

The usual rules apply: once defrosted, look at the chicken, if it looks ok then smell it, if it smells normal then it will almost certainly be perfectly ok to eat. If it's any consolation I've kept chicken in the freezer well past a year and it was absolutely fine.

Stale crackers can be refreshed by a couple of minutes in a hot oven. Alternatively you can crush them and mix with grated cheese and they make a great topping for pasta bake

Again, more ideas in this thread: any recipes for slightly stale crackers?

I hope you manage to save them both from the bin. :D

    Hi guys,

I cooked some pitta breads yesterday and have some left over how can i re-heat them? I tried just warming in the oven but they just get too crispy, is there any way to use them up?

    thanks
