My mum has a Delia recipe, it was in the Radio Times about 25 years ago and she's used the same recipe ever since. But it's not particularly boozy, and I've never liked it much (don't tell mum I said that!). I have said I'll do the cake this year, so I'd like something richer.

I did one a few years ago (involving soaking the fruit overnight first), made it on Christmas Eve and it was absolutely delicious. If only I hadn't lost the recipe the next time I moved house (it was a Sainsbury's Nectar Card machine-spit...)

Edited to say: aha, Delia Online seems to have just the thing I'm looking for, and it definitely isn't the same as the one Mum's been making all these years :) Thanks Savvy_Sue :D

  • What do I mix with value washing powder to make it work? I have half a box left and it just is not getting my laundry clean..... I know because I have a toddler and her clothes come out with the same stains they went in with:rolleyes:

Errr just one little extra question...

When it says to soak the dried fruit in brandy, would that be intended to include the glace cherries? Would it matter either way?

The main reason I'm asking is that I need to make the cake on Saturday (I have to drop it off at my mum's on Sunday), so I need all the "soaking" ingredients by Friday night, and can't get to the supermarket until Saturday morning. I've got everything else in stock but not the cherries... (I might be able to get some this evening, but don't know).

    Thanks!

Anyone got one of those spiked meat carving stainless steel plates and if so are they worth having? We've always just used a plate but thinking of it for a present for my OH. He's quite in to carving.

I've only ever soaked the raisins and sultanas and added the (candied peel and) cherries when actually mixing the cake.

It's a personal thing, I suppose but I've never felt that they do well when soaked. Helps keep some contrast in the cake if you see what I mean.

It certainly won't hurt things if you don't soak the cherries, honest :)

We have one and use it every time we have a roast as it does stop the meat from slipping. If ours broke then I think we would replace it :)

Yes that does help thanks. Presumably it will help a chicken stay put as well?
  • Yep, and we used it for the turkey too! Its a stainless steel one and its lasted years so a good buy if you ask me!

Marvellous ! Order placed, mincemeat has been maturing for weeks, now if anyone could tell me how to make some space in the freezer short of chucking everything out and starting afresh.... At the moment, it's a case of one item out, three back in - and that's without any visits to the shops and no money spent... Giving up lentils is the only way out I can see at the moment, and that thought is probably MSE heresy....
