People used to do this for lifting steamed puddings out. You could also use folded strips of foil or greaseproof paper, under the chicken, then folded over the top loosely so easily retreived to lift the chicken out? We used to leave the strips outside but might affect the seal on a slow cooker. HTH:)
There you go...crochet pudding lifters. I knew that I hadn't dreamt it. Now if one of you clever people would like to adapt to chicken size....:rotfl:

chicken size would just need to be a crochet doily shape with handles either side. Kind of an "I wouldn't start from here" kind of pattern.

However, I've been thinking of alternative solutions on and off all day (I know, it's sad!) but it occurred to me that a better fit than the chip tray and string solution could be acheived with a cheap oven tray liner and a pair of scissors!

So, maybe start with one of the cheap(-ish) black sheets available in all large supermarkets, and leave the four corners as 'handles' but cut bits out of the sides, maybe put a couple of drainage holes in the bottom. but they're fairly slippery, so I'd worry that the chicken would slide off in the act of lifting it out.

So if you could get a cheap but thicker silicone sheet, they are less slippery and probably more robust (those black sheets seem to disintegrate fairly rapidly), and you could maybe cut a hole out of the middle of the silicone sheet too to make it stretchy and more sling like.

I've practically given up on whole birds now there's just the two of us, or I would experiment myself. I do hope someone will report back ...

    AHA!!

I've got some of those "gas ring saver" thingies. Same sort of sheets and they already have a hole in the middle.

    Hmm...

    Nice one Sue! :)

Now all I need is a chicken. ;)

(I can't believe you've given up buying whole chickens for two of you. Even as a single I buy them. Granted a fair bit of any given chicken ends up in portions in the freezer (or made up in pies in the freezer etc) so the "one time cooking" option to have the base of a few instant meals available, plus soup and/or stock, is one I don't think I'm ever going to turn down.)

It's normally cheaper 'per pound' to buy a whole chicken and either cook it and then divide it, or butcher it first and freeze the component parts.

Seriously thinking about buying a chip tray to butcher and add handles to fit each of my slow cookers....

  • I was going to make an apple crumble for tonight's pudding and then I remembered I've got some (cooked) fruit scones in the freezer. Can anyone suggest ways I could use them as a topping instead, or otherwise include them in an apple pudding?
