Hi Mardartha
I have to say I have never had 'bitter' cabbage. I love cabbage! I do mine in my 3 tiered steamer: usually potatoes in the bottom; then eg carrots in the next tier and then cabbage in the next.0 -
Just steam it - no butter or anything ? How long for ? I'm throwing it in the Remoska along with other veg and chicken and its hellish. UNless its just me who does not like cabbage !!! But I remember my mum making it and it was nice.0

I cut it into quite thin strips, cook in boiling water for about 4 mins, drain then toss in a tiny bit of butter and quite a lot of black pepper. We usually have savoy or other darkish green cabbage but I do white the same. My mum's cabbage was awful but was probably boiled to death!
For something different, you can shred white cabbage, put in a buttered dish, season, pour over cream. Cover and cook in the oven for about 45 mins - it tastes nothing like normal cabbage, I was dubious but it's lovely.
Ps. Just checked the recipe and the oven-baked one, you toss it with some sliced onion and optional grated parmesan as well0 -

If clean, it's cooked.
If very sticky, you need to stay up ... is cake covered? needs to be or top will burn.
If only a bit sticky, cover, turn oven off and go to bed. Will continue to cook as oven cools.
DO NOT turn oven up unless cake has greaseproof paper around the sides and on top!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
thank you, will cover the top. Its only a little bit sticky but I think I will have to stay up, Ill give it another half an hour then go bed. really didnt realise it would take this long. but it will be worth it. yumHappy days

What's the best way to cook cabbage to stop it tasting bitter ?
Is your cabbage fresh - old cabbages develop a bitter taste
Try shredding into 1cm strips. Put in a pan with some thinly sliced (cored but not peeled) eating apple, and some juniper berries if you have any. Add a splash of water and cook on a low heat until the cabbage is soft (about 5-10 mins). Delicious :T:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
