I ended up using brown sugar, just finishing the second lot now.I'd bought 4 kgs of tomatoes,so a lot to get through.I had a trial run the other day using white sugar, and the end result is paler.
I'd certainly like to try other chutneys, and also onion marmelade. My Mum made it once, and gave me the recipe, which I've now mislaid...0 -
I currently spend around 300-400pcm if not more on groceries, take away's and washing poweder etc... This is for 2 adults, one teenager who eats more than us adults and one 6 year old. How much do you think would be do-able for just 1 adult, teenager and child. I have a bread maker so can make bread. It would include breakfast, my lunch and then supper for us all during the week and then 3 meals on the weekends. Things are getting tight in a couple of months so I need to scale down. I work full time but am happy to cook from scratch if I can batch cook on weekends and prep the night before during the week. Any help gratefully received.
If I've posted this in the wrong place can you move to correct location please. thx0 -

Hey there, you are definitely in the right place on MSE but I think this thread would be good to have a look at

Through the site, mostly through Weezl's hard work there is now a planner to be found for £100 a month for a family of 4. If you could try some of these recipes or even the whole plan it could really cut down on your spending
www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk
And there are also lots of recipes on here to make your own equivalent of take aways, Curry Queen's curry recipes for instance. Or you could look at making the "washing gloop" to reduce outgoings on washing powder.
Is there one area in which you think you spend most?God is good, all the time

Thanks I'll have a look at these. I have looked at a few of of the recipes on Weezle's thread but my kids won't eat some of them. I have tried. To be honest my biggest extravagence aside from magazines is food. I LOVE food which isn't great. That combined with coming home at 6pm and then having to prep and cook for us all, I have to say I find exhausting. I think because I've had a long day, been up early walking the dog (I do this for 2hrs a day). Hence I get tempted to get a ready meal or a take away.0

You may also find the 'Grocery Challenge' thread helpful. You'll find it at the top of the OS board. The aim is to gradually reduce your spend to a level you're comfortable with. I find it very motivational.

I managed to acquire a slimline dishwasher from Freecycle (how cool was that!!) I have been using the quick wash (40deg and lasts 40 minutes) so far without any problems. I have been using any dishwasher tablet on offer (apart from the value range as I couldn't get away with them at all) and yesterday I thought i would try Aldi's own make as they were recommended.
Opened the dishwasher and 3 of my plates were smeared with tablet residue and there was a lump of tablet at the bottom not dissolved! Has anyone had this problem? Would it go away if I used the normal setting (50 deg - last 1hr 20 mins)
How many folk use the quick setting?Kondo'ed 76 items from wardrobe, 4 carrier bags of books0 -
How about trying half a tablet as there doesn't seem to be an issue with the cleaning just too much tablet0

Hi all
I've made a pizza sauce for tea, but just had a taste and although yummy its got a slightly bitter after taste. It contains - garlic & chilli fried quickly, tin toms, fresh basil (heaped tsp), smidge of mixed herbs, tsp dried oregano, tsp of sugar and a smidge of salt all reduced down. Its an adapted Delia recipe.
I'm not sure what gave it the taste, I don't think I burnt the garlic but its that kind of taste, the chilli is from a poorly plant but tasted ok raw (I'm not a huge chilli fan but OH is), and the basil plant is trying to flower. Amazing actually that it tastes any good at all!
I wondered if there are any tried and tested remedies for covering a tang... if we assume its burnt garlic...? It seems a real shame to chuck it out and start again.
Thanks in advance

I find the fast setting on ours doesn't really do the job properly, unless it is something barely dirty like a load of glasses and almost clean plates.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

Never used the quick setting always wash a full load over night (econ 7 electric) on the full normal wash cycle.0
