Just about to make a gingerbread house but DS2 (5) is allergic to egg white - how can I make a suitably sticky icing to hold it all together?

    Thanks!!!

A normal buttercream icing? That's just marge, milk and icing sugar, isn't it? Or jam? Or just a mix of icing sugar and water, surely?

would icing sugar and water be strong enough to hold the roof on and sides together???

Well, it's a long time since I was playing with icing, but if you make it stiff enough then I would think so.

DS3 had to make cakes for Physics the other day (his teacher thinks they should all learn to do this before leaving home, so in 6th form they all take it in turns to bring in home-made cakes! and Mum is not allowed to interfere!), and all I know is that some red icing remained firmly stuck to the plastic container he used for some considerable time ...

The butter cream might work better, because you can slap on a thick layer, like mortar if you were bricklaying, and squidge it down well. But again, it needs to be a stiff mix, because if not things will just slide off ...

Good luck, listen to any more experienced decorators who come along if they manage it in time, and let us know how you get on.

And if it all starts to fall apart, get the cocktail sticks out! You can skewer things together with them. Just remember where they are before anyone eats one ...

  • I've dug out our spare pillows and they look a bit dusty. They're the cheapy synthetic kind, not feathers or anything like that.

I tried googling how to clean them so they don't end up all clumpy and uneven, but it seems I'm a bit of a hopeless case as I have no tumble dryer, clothes line, airing cupboard or tennis balls.

Should I try machine washing them anyway? Do I need to use any bleach or would normal detergent do the job? I take it I should only wash a couple at a time and give them loads of space to move about?
  • Does anyone know how long condensed milk will keep refigerated?

This might sound silly but I would be tempted to take them outside for a good shake and then hoover them with the hose attachment. I think if you wash them they might collapse! Once you have a nice clean pillowcase on it it shouldn't matter too much. I have a hypoallergenic pillowcase that goes over my pillow and under the normal case, think they are a good investment to prevent getting too much dust under your nose if you are a sneezy type :)

I recently acquired a Cookworks slow cooker (large white oval one) which was donated to me by MIL who didn't use it - I think she had used it once. The first few times I used it were ok, then during the cooking of a chicken casserole it started to make intermittent loud cracking noises. I discovered that there were brown marks on the outside of the ceramic pot (which wiped off after cooking) and then that it had started to look crazed both inside and out. There are no actual cracks in it as far as I can see, but I wondered if this is what happens or if this particular one is faulty? Any ideas?

    thanks

After I've had the obligatory bubble and squeak and cold beef today, there will be some of the joint left, probably one meals worth which I'm going to freeze, (my old cat would have got this previously as a treat) I also have a small amount of gravy left, can I cover the meat with the gravy or would the gravy be better done separately.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.
