  • Last night, I cooked Nigella's ham in cola in the SC, only I used cola and cloudy lemonade. Anyway, how do I use up all this sweet stock:confused:
it smells lovely all porky and lemony, but I think it'll be too sweet for soup or gravy, so I'm stuck for what to do with it.

I whip my eggs in a jug and use about 1/2 to 2/3 the volume of SS milk ;) I don't use cream as a matter of course.

You could make a bacon and lentil soup. I don;t use fizzy drinks to cook with (or drink _pale__pale_ ) but that's what I do with the stock when I cook gammon in apple juice :D

Could you freeze it perhaps, for another day - maybe serve with some pork chops or to make 'sticky ribs'?

  • Thanks for the replies, folks. I've just made soup, I think it tastes fine. I used plenty of onions, browned in a bit of bacon, added grated sad carrots, a couple of leeks, some lentils and some marigold stock powder, because it was only pork stock, and I didn't think there was enough flavour from the little bits of bacon that I had used up. If they don't eat it tonight, they'll just have to have it for breakfast tomorrow

PP, I don't normally use fizzy drinks either, but I bought a bottle of smart price cola to try this nigella ham recipe a couple of weeks ago, and I really pleasantly surprised. So this week, I though I would try it with sainsbugs cheap pork loin, and as there wasn't enough cola left to cover it decided to add some of the cloudy lemonade that I keep in for my mum's advocaat. The meat is gorgeous, and let's keep fingers crossed they like the soup.

  • Quick question, will be attempting making bread on monday for the very first time, but also promised my youngest DD we would have a cooking party (bloody annabel karmel cook book my mum bought!!)
Is there a simple bread recipe suitable for little fingers?? (3 yr olds?)

I seem to remember making some at school when I was about 6/7 but this was 20 years ago now and I wasn't known for being the most attentive...

Also I dont own scales! It sounds daft but I was bought up cooking the american way and work of cups and spoons etc!!! It works fine for my cake and biscuit recipes but am I going to stumble on bread????

Has gone to play on her own little world for a bit..... but its ok the voices in her head came too so she's not alone ;)

    Hi NMM,!

Cups are fine, you can convert the weight into cups - here is a thread about Cup measures and you should find plenty of info and links in there

Not sure off hand of any kids bread recipes but if you have a look through the complete bread making collection, hopefully you will find something to suit your needs! Do let us know how you get on :p

Are you using a bread machine? If so, let DD help with measures etc, then put machine just to mix, then take dough out. Give DD a lump of dough to [STRIKE]play[/STRIKE] work with, and let her make a little loaf while you make a big one.

If not using a bread machine, divide the dough in two and keep swapping during the kneading process ...

These are just theoretical ideas, you understand!
