Genuine question - I'd really appreciate knowing the answer
Have you seen this thread by squeaky, which gives loads of tips on searching?

I'm fine at searching, I wasn't necessarily referring to me.
But I think many new people (to both MSE and OS board) may find it intimidating to search for eg how to make carrot cake, and get a thread with 100+ answers when all they want is the recipe! Especially if they are not used to reading merged threads. I think there are a lot more merged threads on OS than on another other board, so if your 'home' board is not OS it might throw you.
Just my 2 cents anyway

I agree with flutterby but that's not to say the merging and indexes aren't a hugely valuable resource. However i do think people should be understanding when they get asked a question for the millionth time, as it's not always easy to get a simple answer.0

I would rather have a big thread to look through. Imagine if you open a recipe, make it - and it doesnt work?! Hard to understand why right? But for me personally, I read the whole thread - or the first few pages anyway. That way I can understand peoples problems, issues, substitutes and general outcomes. You could look up carrot cake and find 100 different threads - rather than one thread with 100 responses. I know which one i would rather look through. I definitely think it's valuable to read experiences and variations on recipes. Eg - i was recently making leek and potato soup - the first recipe on the thread - I didn't have some of the materials, so i kept looking through until I found a) a recipe I had all the ingredients for b) a recipe from a "trusted" user - who I know knows what they are talking about
I thin if people aren't used to OS, they come in here, ask a question without searching properly (ok, understand), then kick up a stink when it is merged with another existing thread. However, Old style is exactly that - Old style - so the only thing that will "change" as such, may be modern day prices - IMO anywayI guess it can be frustrating if you aren't used to OS.
I would bet money on the next ten threads being started, being merged into another one - as someone has already been there, and the question has already been answered.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Why, do you think people aren't understanding?A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Quick question - I roasted a huge amount of pork on Sunday, it's been sliced in the fridge since then; if I freeze it today I presume it's still safe and edible??0

I would freeze it. I often do this for meat I thought I might use and then realise that I am not going to use it all up.0

It seems to be the case all over the forums, not specific to OS, but yes i think people can respond to threads with some comment about "use the search  more often than not. Not always though, of course...0 -
