yes you can, and it lasts quite a while ;) can't be more specific than that, as I'm getting about 3 meals from a single joint -- use one that day, freeze two, then use them at roughly 2 or 3 week intervals, so they've gone in 4 or 6 weeks.

Hi tori the meat should keep for at least 3 months, inside your freezer there should be a little chart (mine has pictures) telling you how long things will keep. When I get a roast we usually have a meal then I slice and double bag the rest of the meat in meal sized potions that way I am only taking out what I need. With it just being the kids who are eating the roasts they should last for ages, you could always freeze 1 roast unfrozen then when you are finished the first cooked one cook the second and refreeze the cooked meat afterwards. hope that makes sense and is some help

  • Hello everyone haven't posted for a bit..but have just made my first soup with lentils so had to share.

3lb of carrots (pony ones) worked out at about 10p
    1 onion-3p (whoopsied)
    lentils i chucked in a cupful (30p)
and two litres of veg stock, couple of bay leaves off tree and fresh herbs (o p)

Left in slow cooker and then added salt and pepper to taste..have had three bowls already (not personally) and have enough for about 6 or 7 bowlfuls..
Quite yummy i have to say and filling.

    Evening all

Well my wool order has just come home with hubby :j ooohhhh lots of pretties -but I MUST NOT touch it until I have finished my crochet blanky ...must show some restraint  .....most of it is for making blankies for family for next year oh and a couple of big funky scarves for my nieces -oh and 1 for me too ;)

Have been fairly organised today -turned the sweet potatoes, roasted tomatoes n chilli and some broth mix into a huge batch of soup -oh and some soft goats cheese went in too-going to freeze some up later :D

Made some bread and some tortillas filled with chinese pork n veg with noodles for dinner

Phizzimum - hope the chicken cobbler went down ok :D

I have declared my final total for this months GC... only spent €49.04 :T and €40 of that was stuff for this rotten cold  ..Im hoping for another super frugal month(starts on friday) I still have quite a bit in the freezer-so Im hoping to stick €500/£400 straight into the savings account ;) :j

right I had better get back to my blanky making -the quicker I get it done the sooner I can start on my new goodies :D

    have a great evening all:D

  • whats that in quids mrs m? Definately want to have a frugal month...debt total now in the 25,000s and want to get to the 24's next month! Only way to do this with meagre money in account is to eat what I have!! Lots in the cupboards and may need to be innovative! Any idas for flax seeds? Did think of making some hm yummy museli for the w/e; have loads of flour and a few soups and with discovering lidl veg think I may be onto a winner...
hope youre ok weezl...did you ever manage to work out how much the fan was to run an hour btw? Been really trying with this and have managed to sleep 2 hrs with it off!! I do miss the whirring noise though!

Hi In search of me :D

Do you mean how many £s have I spent this month? if so €50= about £40 ;)

Hoping for similar this month -I need more bits n bobs -like the meat to make the sausages but I won't be spending anything on rotten cold stuff -my lovely mum has sent me some more boots n cold flu capsules :j they are brill :D so im putting those away for over winter "just in case"

Im finding myself being a bit more creative too :D
I was in serious need of something sweet this evening -so whipped up a crumble in the remoska... and there is half left and custard for tomorrow:T
It was free apples n blackberries from the freezer and some bottled plums and crumble with golden sugar, meusli and coconut in..nomnomnom -even hubby loved it -and he doesn't have much of a sweet tooth

I have been sat pawing my new wool lovingly :o but I need a new crochet hook as the one I have isn't big enough as I have super chunky wool -this is one kind -I have lots of different colours too -plus other wools

    http://www.kempswoolshop.com/wool_details.aspx?selectedItemID=-233039091

Hoping it will make super warm blankies -plus grow quickly ;)

Do you have an ALDI near by? as they have their 39p offers on -mum says this week it was cauli, brocc, cabbage, carrots, potatoes n onions

I can't wait to start growing all the produce again next season.. anyone wanting to have a bash at growing sweet potatoes next season I can explain how -they are soooo expensive -thinking weezle here ;) ... I have started setting the broad beans for over wintering, have some peas to set soon too.. and have also got some pea beans to have a go at like these -planning on storing for winter ....

  • jtb2412 Have made carrot chutney but used less tea and more vinegar. Chickened out and only used 3 whoopsied chillis. Happier making Delia's Doverhouse Chutney with 1 chilli!

    run out of dishwasherpowder/tablets

hi loocyloo, I know it's probably too late now. Just did a quick google - seems baking soda and borax will do the job. Is baking soda the same as bicarb? I can never remember. I've been caught out running out of dishwasher detergent before and it's a pain isn't it? can't believe I washed up by hand all those years and now I've got so lazy!

mrs m -the cobbler was lovely! sorry I hadn't posted - it's always worrying when someone says they're going to try your recipe and they suddenly disappear!

DD (age 7) helped me cook it and loved it. DD (age 10) is not so keen on dumplings etc and of course left hers till last, moaning that it was too dry. but she liked the leeks which were the thing I thought they'd complain about!

DH lurrved it though! And we've got lots more leeks in the garden so I think chicken and leek cobbler (or variations thereof) will be making a regular appearance on the menu!

cw18 - like the sound of your liver casserole. I always fry my liver, but it's a fine line between cooking it just enough and ending up with it dry and chewy, so I'll give it a go in the oven instead. I also much prefer meals that I can prep and leave, as opposed to slaving over a hot stove at the last minute.

haven't cooked the chestnuts yet, prob wont have the woodburner on till Wed night so I'll cook them then. when DD was in Tesco with me last night she couldn't believe they were selling chestnuts for £2.99 a bag!

    Hi everyone !

Hope you are all ok :D - things still very hectic here but i've just got 5 mins while dinner is cooking ;) .

Dinner tonight is sausagemeat patties (mixed with 1/4 of a red pepper (homegrown), onion (dug from farm shop so about 1p !) and home grown chilli powder) not sure how they'll turn out but we'll see ! Very frugal meal as the sausagemeat was free (long story but basically Sainsburys paid me to take about 30 lots away :p ). Having it with potato wedges (potatoes free - mum and dad buy us a sack) and baked beans (21p). Using up 1/2 jar of sainsbury's 4p curry sauce too so all in all dinner is costing us 23p for 4 of us :j (that's the best i've ever done lol). Homemade rice pudding for dessert (not sure about the cost of that one - need to start doing daily totals once I get a bit more time on my hands, fingers crossed that will be next month ! )

DD1 is out at a friends house so having tea round there.

Have managed to pick up some reduced bits and bobs in Somerfields this afternoon (including their 'best' lamb shanks which were £5.99 - I got them for £1.02 :T ) - will be saving them for a nice meal with hubby one evening :p .

kentishmaid - that's the great thing about chutneys, you can make to your individual taste. Exciting too as you never know how it's going to taste until it's 'matured' - i've not had any disasters yet with any of mine but there's always a first lol :D - my very favourite though is still courgette chutney with spiced damson coming a close second ! Recently tried our tomato and chilli one and it is really good !

Have loads of chillis here so going to do some chilli jelly next week - am thinking it will go great with sausages  .

I envy all of you who have grown leeks this year. Really love them but didn't have the space but they're on the list for the allotment next year !

Thanks for all the recipes - keep them coming !

Will pop back on after dinner :D
