Jammie Dodger,
Thats fantastic. I love to see these things as I can then use them to batter the fella into submission with, as he never believes me on portion sizes (He's not a big veg fan so tries to get out of it, or get away with as little as possible!! :rotfl:). Although I do agree with you that some of those portions do seem awffy big in comparison to some of the others!
Speaking of which, he's doing the shopping today, so I dread to think what he's going to bring home. Might have to ask you all for some recipe ideas to make sense of the madness... I wish he'd told me before I was heading out the door this morning and I could have given him a list

Frugalista wrote: »Evening guys! Made a smashing meal for dinner last night and felt I must share the recipe. I think I got it from an American website and it goes by the rather curious name of "Cabbage Rolls" Hope somebody finds it useful.
Cabbage Rolls
1 lb lean minced beef
1-2 onions chopped
1 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
1 cup long grain rice
1 can tomato soup (condensed) (I only had Meditteranean Tomato)
1 can mushroom soup (condensed)
1 soup can water
3 cups cabbage, shredded
Shred cabbage and place in a large dish. (I used a large lasagne dish, and around ¾ Savoy cabbage).
Fry Meat and drain off fat. (I also added garlic, diced red pepper and mixed herbs)
Add onion, salt, pepper and rice, stir.
Add soups and water, mix well.
Pour meat and soup mixture over the top of the cabbage. DO NOT STIR!!!
Cover pan with aluminium foil, and bake in a preheated oven Gas 4, 180° C, 350° F for around 2 hours.
It is yummy and so simple to make.
Enjoy!!
Just happen to have all these ingredients in, so - dinner tonight!*Coming home to Wales :j - counting down: 8 weeks :-)*0 -

Didnt try it last nice as gas ran out (we're on bottles) so will have this evening. I am guessing that the rice will absorb the soups.*Coming home to Wales :j - counting down: 8 weeks :-)*0

Just had one my favourite frugal and low calorie breakfasts of 50g oat bran, mixed with half a tin of prunes in apple juice (juice drained = used in chewy fruit muesli slices yesterday
- although thought these needed a little more 'sticking power' with the addition of a bit of date syrup, but would make a lovely granola) and about a cup of skimmed milk. Yummy
(tastes a lot better than it sounds, and fortunately I have a pretty robust digestive system!).

RE Cabbage Rolls - the soup is condensed soup and extremely thick, hence the 1 soup can of water. Also it "loosens up" a bit when you mix it with the mince and, Yes, the rice absorbs it. I too was a little unsure when I first read the recipe but it really is tasty and so quick to prepare. Go for it.

Hmmmm... a lunchtime wander to Mr Ts has produced a 1kg bag of carrots for 25p. Anybody have any ideas for them, or should I just grate and freeze and throw them into my mince at a later date?Perpetual Lurker!

Hi there all!
I haven't been on for a while so have just been catching up. Glad to see some new recipes, shall be trying them out soon. I'm now living with 3 others and we cook and eat together so I am coming home to restaurant quality food some nights, there is a bit of a tagine theme going on which is lovely. The only problem is the growing list one of the girls has of things she doesn't like. She used to be a veggie but doesn't like any pulses or any fruit, brown bread or breakfast cereal, she likes to have meat in every meal and eats a lot each time! Eek.
Carebearbecky, I made some Carrot Jam a while ago and it was really good, tasted delish and looked a little like marmalade.
Hope all of you are well and enjoying pumpkin season too (soooo tasty!)God is good, all the time

Ceridwen, a seasonal veggie soup just for you
Pumpkin soup
1 tbsp tomato puree (5p from tube, or 10p from mini tin)
1/2 a small pumpkin (Sainsburys have them for 99p, so 50p)
2 Mr T value onions (20p)
1 Mr T value stock cube (10p)
skin, deseed and roughly chop pumpkin & onions. Add water, (dunno how much, I made mine FAR too thick, so I'd say cover the veg plus the same again) crumble stock cube in, boil for a bit (notice how accurate I am?) and puree with hand blender.
Serves 4
21p per portion
Have made it my mission to do a veggie main meal this weekend for less. Am thinking something pasta ish...0
