Speaking of mincemeat, this is an absolute favourite of mine...

    Streusel Mincemeat Cake

    Cake
    175g self-raising flour
    125g caster sugar
    125g butter
    2 eggs
    1 tbsp milk
    2 tsp vanilla extract
    412g jar of mincemeat

    Topping
    75g soft brown sugar
    125g crunchy toasted cereal
    3 tsp cinnamon
    50g plain flour
    50g butter

    1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius and Grease an 8/9 inch round tin
    2. Sift the SR flour and add sugar, mix with hand mixer for 30 seconds
    3. Add butter and eggs and beat for 60 seconds until mixture lightens and becomes creamy
    4. Add milk and vanilla and beat for 30 more seconds
    5. Pour into tin and spoon the mincemeat evenly over the top
    6. Mix topping ingredients in a food processor to form crumbs (or break up cereal and rub ingredients together with fingers)
    7. Sprinkle topping evenly over cake
    8. Bake for approximately an hour
    9. Cool in tin for 10 minutes and remove from tin and cool on a rack

Lovely hot or cold and I have done the topping before using whatever things are in the cupboard, chopped nuts, muesli, cereal etc

Well I've finally finished rolling out that pastry. I tell you it's nice, but really flaky, I don't think I'll make that again. The tarts are in the oven now. I made little dinky ones as I'm trying to lose weight. There was a lot of filling left over, so I put them in their own little case so it's like creme caramel. I hope they come out alright. I don't buy fresh milk as I cannot finish it before it goes off, so I used powdered. I added some vanilla essence and it smells gorgeous.

I found a recipe online for no knead tortillas (I really like getting my own way lol). I made it too the recipe, but it was too wet, so I had to keep adding more flour until it was a soft dough. My basics are now nearly run down, and I'm about to do a price comparision on mysupermarket.com, who wants to bet that the total will be the same give or take 5p?
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T

Thanks for all the recipes! I copied and pasted them onto a word doc and printed out for my folder.

Thanks for the mincemeat ones as I got some bargain jars yesterday - might have to go back and see if there are any left tomorrow to use in the mincemeat cake etc.

Aren't you all lovely caring and sharing!

I will post the tomato sauce recipe when I dig it out to cook at the weekend, I'm making it with the £3 for 8 cans of chopped toms (I usually use Napolina plum ones at approx £1 each unless on a rare offer). Will let you know how it goes with the replacements.

Now a little question, I have a friend coming round for tea next week. I would like to cook frugally from scratch for her. Something treaty but not pasta, I don't mind buying something in at the weekend eg pork belly (my fave!) and I've got loads of staples in.

I would love to hear what you would do or have done as I need to keep costs down completely :D

feduandskint...why not pasta? The recipe I posted with smoked salmon, pasta and cream is great for a cheap dinner...asda smartprice smoked salmon bits (88p I think), fresh pasta, (1.30 ) and a pot of cream...can add fried mushrooms for a bit extra...its delicious with a bit of black pepper...

reporting back on home bargains trip

well, I tried doing the maths all the way round, comparing HB with asda, working out how many units was like for like comparison etc. But I'm not sure if I got it right all the way round, let's see, I've got my receipt...

right, green olives stuffed with peppers-55p per 340g jar, thought that beat asda, and yep, :T:T:T:T:T:T Asda's cheapest is 82p per 340g I bought 5 jars so saved myself £1.35 :money::money::money:

I'll just do some more maths of my other finds, but that already reduces the price per portion of the pasta primafrugalista to 27p from 31p per portion :D:D:D

Wish we had a Home bargins here - they don't have many branches in Scotland. The nearest is apparently ~16 miles away :(. I'm hoping the aldi opening in June near me will help reduce some of my costs. Is Aldi any good at all? I've never been in one as the nearest store is over an hour each way by bus.
It'll be interesting to see how the Sainsburys across the road will react.

There's a chain round here called B&M Bargains, it's kinda like Home Bargains so there's always cheap branded stuff to be had, not sure if it's a local only thing or a nationwide thing.
