Monarch Airlines - how safe ??

Friends of mine are due to fly later this month (and again in the New Year) with Monarch. I wonder how far down the league table they are of sustainable airlines.

  • pleased to see that Monarch arn't listed - not sure whether that's good or bad - perhaps they have already collapsed before I could place a bet !!
  • 100% SAFE.

I know all about Monarch, They are the oldest established 'Independant' Airline in Britain.

    The Airline is run 'Meticously'

They have a track record of 50 + years, And are currently joint 2nd largest Charter Airline with Thomas Cook.

    The No1 is Thomson/First Choice.

These companies make profit into the millions each year every year.

The key to success at monarch is it promotes it's managers internally, All it's current and past managers/directors have been there at least 20 years each, Before they are on the board.

Danny Bernstein current MD has been there since he was in his teens.

And he knows Monarch as the back of his hand.

So I can guarantee you that Monarch is here to stay, Whether or not they do decide to merge or not with another Airline they are here permanently.

    Best Regards.

  • Yes - but no matter how long the Directors have been "on board" so to speak, do any of them have any influence with the price of a barrel of oil !! - also are they protected from the current influences of the credit crunch ?

Monarch are the airline that has been tasked by the CAA to co-ordinate the XL.com rescue operations. Even the regularity body know what a good operation they are....
  • Monarch have very limited debts, As they own nearly all of their Aircraft.

Most other Airlines about 95% lease their Aircraft on either wet or damp lease a wet lease can be 5 years.

Monarch is the equivelant as say - Tesco's it has been around that long the Business actually runs itself, As it is a continous cashflow input into it's accounts.

Operating for 50 + years they have made all those years of profit, And not really spent as much as other Airlines have.

So Monarch will have a big balance sheet.

When Airlines make money they do and they do it very well.

It's just that in this Business when things do go wrong they all go at once.

That's what they said about Danair when it rescued Air Europe and look what happened to them!

If you stressed about the possibility of every single airline going bust you would never fly anywhere.

Monarch are a good airline, they have been around for a long time and if they were carp then I am sure that the CAA would never have recruited them to do the mercy flights for the XL passengers. XL have been having financial problems for the last two years - mostly of their own making because they could not adapt to a changing market.

Make sure you have some good travel insurance and pay by credit card if you are afraid that Monarch or any other airline will go boing over night.
  • What went wrong At Dan was they had an elderly fleet of 727's & 1-11's over 40 of them.

The board suddenly decided to modernise the fleet with limited resources, They bought a handful of machines, At a cost especially the 2 A300's.

Coupled with the Economic Downturn, And fierce competition on the euro routes out of Gatwick with neighbour Air Europe.

Air Europe was a surprise, They were performing very well, I can't remember the 'exact' reason why AE went under, Think it was a mixture again of new Aircraft and DA competing.

Dan flew the 727's for too long, A 3 engined 'Coal Burner' A lovely Aircraft, But when the likes of Britannia & BA were getting modern Aircraft DA was spending money on old machines.

It was a well known joke - oh look a DA smoking chimney!! or Chugalug.

DA could have been saved by Sir Richard Branson, But he decided not to at 11 pm the night before, Instead BA bought the Airline for a quid.

And did the inevitable - Sacked half of Crawley with it!!

DA was bad, But not as bad as it is now.
