I've just done a Crucial.com system check and it shows I have a 512mb memory installed plus an empty slot. If I buy an extra 512mb would it be as simple as opening up the box and clicking it into place in the empty slot?
yes as simple as that,,,if your running Xp then another 512Mb will be fine...if its vista then think about getting 2Gb(2x1GB sticks)If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -

Ccleaner

Goto the main 'C' drive icon. Right click and PROPERTIES will tell you what size it is and how much space is left:idea:0 -

I dont see anything major
Your running Norton which is going to slow it down (But nothing like it is doing)
I would suggest taking it off and putting a free firewall and anti virus on personally
Do you know what AOL DEMO and MBBALLOON are?
Sounds like they could (possibly) be stopped
Download this ~
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Give it a scan to see if theres anything it can find
Failing that its possible your hard drive is coming to the end of its life!:idea:0 -
AOL demo is from when I got the computer ... I have removed so many bits of AOL its ridiculous!! Dont know what the MBBALLOON is ...........
My computer has been this slow coming on for at least a year .... and it is only two years old (I know old in computer years) .... would love to upgrade ... but wont be for a while :-(
Will run the malwarebytes scan now and will keep you posted on what I can find.
Thank you so much for your help aliEnRIK0 -
Well go back to ccleaner and uncheck AOL so that it wont start up (No one seems to know WHAT mbballoon is so better leave that be for now). And uninstall anything AOL associated (Ccleaner is quickest way of uninstalling)
I would also suggest SPYBOT
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
UPDATE
IMMUNISE
SCAN
we can take from there:idea:0 -
ok took off AOL ,,,, and ran spybot which found 17 probs....
Done a system search for mbballoon and nothing showing .... goodness knows what it is!?!?!
Do you think it is just my computer ... it is e-system off pc world .... it met all the spec i wanted but maybe should have gone for more expensive model?? Does eveything else i want to do .....and more .... it is just turning the darn thing on that takes for ever !?!?0 -
Hang on....whoever said a Semperon 3000+ is carp is talking nonsense !! I've had mine for 2 yrs, and it still zips along. Only stuck an extra Gig in it last week to up it to 2GB, to ensure an even longer life. I'm running XP SP3, 80GB HDD, ASROCK mobo, avast antivirus, spyware doctor, CCleaner and Spybot (but only 'coz I like the startup tool
) Keep it clean and lean and the Semperon will do things just fine !!
I would say to anyone to use a minimum of 1GB RAM if your mobo will take it, XP likes this much and although it will run ok on less, your pc will love you for putting some more in.
BOBS - looking at your startup list, there seems to be plenty on there you could stop running at startup, e.g.
HKCU:Run
yahoo pager
BgMonitor
BTCLiveUpdate
Nokia.PCSync - disable
PC Suite Trray
HKLM:Run
Recguard
VTTimer
VTTrayp
EPSON Stylus - disable
ccApp - disable
YBrowser - if this is the internet explorer toolbar add-in, disable
RealTray
QuickTime Tash - disable
Norton Save and Restore
AOL_Demo - disable
SunJavaUpdatedSched - disable
NeroFilterCheck - disable
NBKeyScan
btbb_wcm_McciTrayApp
B=btbb_McciTrayApp
MBBalloon
osCheck
PC Pitstop - disable
Startup Common
Adobe Reader Speed Launch.Ink - disable
BT Broadband Desktop Help - disable
Media Checker.Ink
Norton GoBack.Ink
...and that's just a quick look without googling some of the others...some will be needed e.g. for your graphics, sound, etc., but some of those others probably will not. If you highlight them in the Spybot system startup tool, it will have info about most of them displayed in the info box to the right, at the side of the list - if you can't see it, re-size the window so you can.
Also, uninstall/delete any unused programs from control panel/add/remove programs - this will free up some HDD space. Then, once you've done all this, do a:
1. CCleaner registry scan and clean
2. CCleaner cleanup
3. Spyware Doctor scan and clean
4. Create a system Restore point
5 My Computer/C-drive(or D, or whatever depending if it's partitioned or not, properties, disk cleanup, ensure all the boxes are ticked, then click the MOre Options tab, click system restore (to remove old restore points, take up loads of space), and let it do it all.
6. Do a defrag
7. restart the pc.
I bet this will give you a noticeable difference in performance on startup and while it's running
p.s. - a quick google shows MBBalloon hasn't yet been classified by some malware labs, so disable that too in startup......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
