Cruciate ligament damage in dogs

  • Hi Everyone

Am new here and joined because there seems to be a lot of dog owners having experience of the TPLO op. I have just dropped off our 5 yr old golden retriever, Meggie at the Vets for this op today and wanted to ask if anyone has more than one dog and did you keep them separated for the entire time as we also have her brother and a springer spaniel and they are not used to being separated at all.

Also not a crated dog so will be with us in a room with a mattress which Vet says ok but would be interested in any views.

    Thanks

Hi, hope Meggie's op went well.

We have 3 dogs - all Springers. We haven't kept them apart and we haven't crated Briar who had the op. We did however get a stair gate. Our biggest problem is that our dogs are used to being on the settee and you have to be quick stopping her jumping on and off. She's been fine at night though - once we've carried her upstairs and put her on the bed she doesn't move all night :rotfl:

It's felt really mean taking her out on a lead when the other two are running free so we've tried to exercise them seperately when possible.
  • Thanks so much for the reply - you sound just like us!

We picked her up yesterday and she was able to do a three legged walk to the car although a bit disorientated but happily slept on the way home. She has settled on her duvet in the bedroom which has a stair gate across at the moment separate from the other two but they can see each other, has had her medication, something to eat and been out on quite a few trips to the garden when needed and is fast asleep at the moment so am really pleased with how she has been as she is normally very bouncy but seems to know her limitations and has adapted to it so quickly. Early days I know but am feeling better about it as first dog I have had with this injury so was quite a scary prospect!

    How is Briar doing now?

Briar also seemed to know her limitations the first few weeks and was pretty calm. She's starting to get a bit more boisterous now, currently throwing a blue fluffy duck around.

Can't wait until she can be off the lead, especially as we're off to South Wales on holiday at the end of November :j
  • Glad to hear Briar is well on the road to recovery by the sounds of it and hope you have a great holiday in Wales - one of our favourite haunts too.

Meggie has had a setback, in short the bandage slipped on Saturday and she could not stand properly so we ended up at the emergency vets who had to restrap it - really painful for the poor lil girl, but as always struggled but not a peep. She has thankfully had the secnd bandage removed today but it had also slipped and was very tight on her lower leg which the vet expressed concern over but hopeful that it will sort itself out? Now has collar on and none too pleased about that but relieved to have the bandage off. Roll on 7 weeks....... Am telling her she can look forward to the hydro therapy - loves water!

Just a quick update - Briar went back to the vets this afternoon and has been given the all clear :j :j :j

She can now be let off the lead and can run free. The vet suggested we start off with not more than half an hour off the lead and we'll make sure she's somewhere flat to start off with. Apparently, after 8 weeks the scar tissue is as formed as it will get so she's as good as she will ever be on it and the vet was very pleased with her recovery

Waggy tails all round here :D

How are the other doggies doing????

Great news about Briar. Misty has been off the leash in the garden for the last 2 days. At the weekend she'll be chuffed when I take her to the park and let her off there. After so many weeks of curtailment it's a bit scary seeing her race round the garden though.

  • Must be great to be able to let Briar and Misty off the lead and have a bit of freedom. Megan is doing really well (op 23/10) - having three short walks down the road a day, still on painkillers which will stop next Monday but between snoozing is very alert and its a job to slow her down! Am dreading her off the painkillers as know she is going to try pinging off the walls!
  • You might find that taking her off the pain killers might not be a bad thing - it might help her to know her limits.

Hope Megan and Misty continue to recover well x

Just had a fright tonight. Misty went to jump up on the sofa and her leg gave way. I had one scared Dog shaking again. It's what we went through a couple of times before her operation. Think I need to keep her calm and back in her cage for a couple of days and see how it goes. It's just been in the last week she has had longer off her leash in the park too. Thank god for Reiki. It seems to be the only thing that calms her shaking. I was also unsure which leg went. The one which was operated on or the other. It's 90 minutes later and she seems to be walking okay for now. Last time we had months in between this happening so maybe I will not get a year before another operation is needed.
