Cruciate ligament damage in dogs

Really hope its good news for Briar but what a pain you can't get an earlier appt, still at least, little consolation I know but if she has to have it done you know what to expect - We didn't and it really worried us - having this forum and your postings has really been helpful.:A
Do hope you get to the bottom of Skye's problem and recovers soon.
We're just plodding away for the next six weeks but is getting increasingly difficult now as Meg thinks she's back to normal but am keeping to the routine despite her protesting!:rolleyes:0 -
My vet reckoned that something like 75 -90% of dogs that ruptured one cruciate ligament would rupture the other....don't know if that was a "proper" statistic or just his experience though!
If it's any consulation my rott had 3 ops in 3 months for cruciate repairs and all worked out well....in some ways it's better to get them over and done with. BTW, he went one better than Briar:D he damaged both ligaments at the same time!!!!!
Thanks for your comments. We think it's probably best she gets it done now too while she young and otherwise healthy.0 -

Thanks. Skye is off to see her consultant next Monday so hopefully we'll find out more then.
This forum is great for sharing worries and concerns, there are so many nice people on here.0 -
Hope everything went ok on Monday for Skye.0

Thanks for asking. She went in on Monday and they put her on a drip to get her fluid levels up. Yesterday she had an endoscopy (camera down the throat) and a bronchoscopy. They suspected a foreign object was stuck in her throat or her lung.
The tests didn't show a foreign object but the vet strongly suspects that she has, or had a grass seed in her lung and it's possible that it has either rotted away or has moved further down than the camera can go. To open her up and look would be major surgery so they want to avoid that for now. There was a large build up of mucus on her right lung which they washed out with saline and have sent samples away for analysis so they can make sure that they are giving her the best antibiotics for her infection. She has to go back in 3 weeks for another x-ray to see if it's cleared up which will mean that whatever was in there has gone. If there's still a problem then they'll have to open her up.
I think we'll know in the next week if she's improving or not and we're keeping our fingers (and paws) very tightly crossed as the surgery that would br required is not without it's risked. The vet will call us with the test results which should be throught in the next 5 - 7 days and if we have any concerns in the meantime we can take her straight back in.
I picked her up at lunchtime and she had a little walk and is now snoring on the settee.0 -
Poor little Skye - fingers crossed it clears up and will be ok and surgery not required - sounds horrendous - have had problems with grass seeds in the past but usually been external in paws/ears etc. Glad she is home and resting - best place for her.All is quiet here - Meggie completes 7 weeks today and is doing well although is sneaking up on the sofa quite a bit now and is wanting to run around and play but have to be strict (ha ha or should I say ho ho ho being seasonal!) for the next 5 weeks. Oh joy.....0

Just checking the thread. I hope Briar does not need surgery this quick. I also was advised Misty would need the other leg operated in the future. I'm just hoping it's not too soon. I've been paranoid with the ice but Misty keeps slipping on my flooring.
I keep cutting short her walks if there is too much ice.
I hope Skye recovers quickly too. I know what it's like having a tube down your throat.
Glad to hear Meggie is doing well.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0 -
Briar doesn't seem to bad, although we are keeping her on a lead for most of her walks. In a way, we think it might not be a bad thing for her to have her other leg operated on now while she is young and fit. Mind you, my husband isn't looking forward to having to carry her up and down stairs again if she does have an op - she weighs a ton :rotfl:
Skye is looking really well and has got her appetite back. The signs are good but it may just be temporary because they flushed all the nasty stuff out of her lung. I guess only time will tell.
Briar often slips on the floor and we cringe when she does but it doesn't seem to bother her.
I hope that Meggie and Misty continue to recover well.
Our three and the cat are looking forward putting the Christmas tree up today and hanging their stockings in front of the fire0 -
Hoping the good news continues for Briar, Skye and Misty. We had snow and ice two days after Meg's operation whilst she still had the bandage on but we were amazed at how quickly she adapted even at that early stage - as everyone has said its the keeping them quiet thats the problem.
Whilst out in the front garden this morning (still on a lead) she had words with a little Westie who deigned to pass her gate and went charging off - we have an incline up to the road and I was fretting as usual but she seems fine - it is difficult not to be too over cautious as I too have in mind that the other one could go but am resigning myself that if it does we know what has to happen but in the meantime will make the most of it and try and enjoy Christmas.
My best wishes to you for a happy and peaceful yuletide :beer:0 -
I'd like to wish you and your 4 legged friends a happy, peaceful and healing Christmas and a waggy New Year. :xmassmile0
