    Globespan good value at 5/1?

depends on what your level of risk would be.

I reckon the next 2 and they may be the last 2 despite what willie walsh has to say, will be alitalia and globespan

All you can do is protect your position. Hope you paid by credit card.

Price of oil is coming down but for many airlines the damage is already done and their financers will be (fast) tightening their belts.
Thankfully, we only paid the deposit of £230 on a visa debit card...more the disappointment really...got a fab deal with flights, accomodation and car hire...would be a shame to have to start all over again

Alitalia rescue bid has collapsed (again!).....watch this space!
    British Ex-pat in British Columbia!
  • Yeah, looks like there last 24 hours.

A sad end of an era, As there are only about 6 Airlines in Italy.

  • paddy power has closed the betting market at the moment, so it appears the winner will be alitalia.

although my betting thread got pulled a few days ago, hopefully there were some travellers who heard alitalia was in trouble and that the bookies seemed to think it was a dead cert.

  • Is there any factual reasons for flyglobespan being on the edge or is it just pure speculation.

They are announcing new routes for next year, and I can't find any information that they are financially insecure. XL and Alitalia had many reports in the news weeks before they went bust, however I can't find any such news on globespan, except they are closing a retail outlet in Edinburgh which is loss making, as everyone books with them online.

Surely the recent boost for international banking will in the short term and hopefully the long term bolster business financing? It's a real pity Mr Bush never announced this a few weeks ago, then maybe XL and Alitalia may have been thrown a lifeline.

    Time will tell I suppose.

As has been posted elsewhere, insurefor.com is offering standalone cover at https://www.supplierfailurecover.com

£4 per person per holiday (£8 pp for annual cover). Seems very widely worded, to cover you for lost deposits, alternative transport to or from your destination.

Sadly, neither Mr Bush nor anyone else has anything to do with the fate of XL Leisure or Alitalia. The latter has already been revived more times than Lazarus and the former posted £multi-million losses long before the oil price hike.

As to Globespan, whether profitable or not, it's surprising how it continues to attract customers who, presumably, have never heard of Internet search engines.

Globespan pulled out of the codeshare after the 2006/2007 season to start their own service on the same routes.

They have decided not to run the transatlantic services this winter, possibly due to their financial situation and/or possibly due to them getting banned from making long sea crossings due to their dubious maintenance regime - the result of which being that they had to fly further than other carriers to get to the same places, as they had to remain within maximum distances from nearest airport.

Withabix... I'd love to hear where you're getting your information from because it's a load of tosh! :rotfl:

Dubious maintenance regime?! Banned from long sea crossings?!

Flyglobespan are doing fine!! There are no hints of problems within the company. Please do not be worried about booking with them, they are still making money and they are looking to make quite a large profit this year!

However, it's the stupidity of these betting sites that are aiding in the downfall of these airlines. If no-one was discussing which airline was next to go, you wouldn't have people afraid to book due to speculation....and sales wouldn't be going down. I honestly can't believe that people are making bets and hoping that thousands of people lose their jobs. It actually makes me feel sick. As I read somewhere else, these people have more money than morals.

  • Im going with Globespan next summer to Florida and protectmyholiday.com do not cover Globespan which is a worry. Also for info they do not cover anything over 6 months away so it's best to check some of this out. I have a package with a car and flight so im ATOL covered thankfully but i'd rather have my holiday as it is without worrying rather than get my refund and have to re book.

Here's hoping Globespan get through, i see no news to suggest they are struggling and can't see why the bookies have them next favourite to go.

We shall see, nothing we can do about it anyway i suppose.
