  • What are 'targets'?
  • What are 'targets'?

They try and get you to meet certain targets with regards to the amount of sales you manage i believe. I put it like that as the whole thing is phony and they make it all sound so important when it isn't, you are force selling junk to people who don't want it. They have 'team sessions' to motivate people to SELL SELL SELL!!! Sounds a blast...not.

Having done a sales job, I can honestly say they are the worst jobs in the world. Never again.
  • Has anyone else heard of Oval innovations in Brighton, or Power House Direct? I went to one job interview with Oval Innovations, it was above a florist, in Hove and had a laminated sign saying Oval Innovations on the door, stuck on with blue tack. I was not impressed!

The interviewer was terrible and told me if I didn't get the job, they wouldn't let me know but not to throw stones at the building or anything like that! I laughed and asked if other people had done that, he looked sheepish. When I asked for some company literature he said there wasn't any except for the website and when asked who the founder of the company was, he said he didn't know as he wasn't interested in that. Hmmm... so anyway I didn't get told if I got the job(as he said) but I wasn't going to take it anyway.

I am still looking for work and I'm a graduate so I am looking for good jobs but recently did get a interview for, what I think is the same company. Has anyone heard of Powerhouse Direct? Trainee Sales and Marketing Direct. Unfortunately I wasted time writing the cover letter and applying for this role.
I got an interview, but when she gave me the address it was the same as Oval innovations, next to a florist. I won't be going, and never got further than the last interview but I am interested to know if anyone else has had experience of these companies? Are they legitimate? Why do they keep changing their names? Is there a watchdog that monitors these companies?
  • I too joined JKP Advertising during the summer break while I was at University. They were more than happy to have me for the 3-4 months, which looking back is not really a suprise, with the retainer (upto 50% of your earnings being deposited into it) only paid after 6 months or so... Luckly I got the money, although it was a case of writing a letter in legalese to the owner and make him sh*t bricks. As a graduate in law I wasnt going to let that idiot have the last laugh.

At the end of the day it was a bit of experience in a demanding work environment...walking around Speke with my keys between my fingers 'just in case'. Luckly I had another part time job in the evening so I wasnt totally out of pocket, but it was certainly the case that I was spending more money on travel and food than I was getting back from this so called "job".

To the Managers/Owners of these types of companies its just a numbers game. Hire as many staff as you can and dare not actually tell anyone what your staff turnover is. Even if one person sells 2 items a week you still have 10-15 people doing the same thing - they may earn sweet F-all , but you will be earning commission from 20-30 items in addition to what you push on some poor unsuspecting OAP.

Its all cash in hand and usually the only thing that says your weekly sales/commission is from the company's owner. So whats to prevent him from saying "oh sorry, out of your 7 sales a fortnight ago only 3 went through" and pocket the rest.

At the time I was working with another 3 people from the same University studying different degrees, we stayed with the company until the end of the summer holiday at which point we all quit on-mass - including the ones that foolishly decided to it as a career. I wish I could say I felt sad for the owner but consdiering even many voluntaary jobs pay your traveling expenses this "job" was a complete joke.

Sadly I fell into the trap and applied for a "Graduate Trainee" job after being made redundant from my management position with a financial services firm. Ah, a needed change I thought. A day later I got a call from P&D Marketing. Luckily I knew exactly who it was and the only thoughts going through my mind was either not to turn up for the interview, or turn up to the interview and make the owner squirm under horrible questions I knew he wouldnt want to answer.

If you are thinking about accepting a job with these clowns - DONT. You would be better off volunteering for something a bit more worthwhile.
  • thrifty_saver....if you read back through this thread there is plenty mentioned about the companies you speak of.

If you read mine story a couple of pages back...i went for an interview and they hadn't even taken the company logo down from the previous scam 'company'!!! After some research i discovered they were from the same big company, they just changed the name to fool people i guess.

Lots of these companies seem linked!! I don't think they ever will go away as what they are doing isn't illegal. They just use every trick in the book to get around the usual laws to scam people.

  • I myself have fallen foul of david coulsons scam. Looking back now i should have guessed something was up when the boss looked younger than me. There wasnt really much of an interview and my observation day was more of firing questions at me and making me feel brilliant when i got one right. After completing a test which i passed i was informed that i got the job and that i started on monday. Monday and tuesday was training but wednesday i had to be at work for half 6 as we were off to manchester to some charity roadshow after which we had to go to middlesborough to see how the job was done so i didnt get home til 11 that night and had to be in for half nine the next day. tedium followed and then bank holiday monday came. " you'll be finished by one or two oclock" nope i finished at 7 which doesnt seem to be near 1or 2. The final straw was being left on tuesday with no break while everyone else went to the pub so i went home and never returned so be warned. I did 66 hours a week for no money

  • I think you are all Idiots! those are normal companies who make profits with a form of marketing called Direct, the brand pays the Marketing company , is the easiest way for a big company to sell a product, that's what you study in a normal marketing school!! Those companies work as a pyramid, you start from the bottom till you reach the management, they say clear that nobody promise you the management , you need to reach it just like a normal job 9 to 5, you need to put effort just like other companies, you can make it unless you give up, everything in your life it's up to you, remember that, if you don't success in something is not the company's fault, just like other companies!!

actually.. they spent all of their interviews not mentioning their company at all. Not what they have sold in the past or what they are currently selling, not what you would be starting out doing. In fact, they DO promise you management. Of what.. they never say.

I spent two interviews being really confused. You see. Any other interview i have been on, even ones on recruitment agencies, WANT you to know about the company. They are proud of what they do and want you to see that. I had one interview recently that even went into details about what they were doing, way past the normal information.

these "marketing" companies in this thread and the ones linked to it that are not yet listed. Do not mention what company you work for.

I applied to one company, was called in for an interview by a second, and in the end i managed to see their notes which listed a third... as THE company. You cannot tell me that is normal. On top of that.. there were more "companies" in the same office (read: room), answering the same phone... (edit: on top of that.. every "company" in that office had the same papers to sign/read)

Then of course you have the bit where the ad promises you one salary, and when you finally get your papers to sign.. it isnt there. In fact, none of it is there. It is ALL (100%) commission...

Read a few posts here and you also see that sometimes.. you dont even get the commission on sales.

This is very much a scam.

If i put an advert in for a mercedes (with pictures of the product), and sell you an old rusty golf with a mercedes tag on it (which only shares the colour of the car in the picture of the ad).. its a scam.

We signed up for the merc, we got a rusty golf that seems to be on bricks.
