  • I recently went for an interview with who I thought was London Marketing Services, but when I turned up the company appeared to be called EA Worldwide. My story is pretty similar to everyone elses...was invited to an 'assessment day' and spent the day standing in WH Smith selling makeup! only to find out the job was purely commission based. There was a couple of us who cottoned on to the scam while waiting for our final interviews, even though I got the job, I could tell it was dodgy and needless to say I didnt take it! But after reading this I am so glad I didnt.
So heres another one to watch out for

London Marketing Services- based in London bridge

aaah, I too have been to an 'interview' to be invited back for an 'observation day' thankfully I googled cobra before I went on the latter after being totally creeped out by the 'interview' and the fact that "Kate" was clearly reading from a script when she phoned me.

Anyone in Norwich, avoid Opal and Marketing Enterprises UK Limited!!!

These companies are all over the country...basically all the same 'mother company' but they give all the offices different names. Some seem to change their names quite a bit...like the one i went to. Maybe because they get too much of a bad reputation to carry on under the same name, so change names to reel in new prey?

not exactly, no - if you google 'cobra scam' you will learn all! Basically these companies don't last and generally get dissolved and the 'MD' is left in the sh*t. But of course new ones spring up all the time, it seems Cobra have no end of company names registered, some are dormant for a while, and then spring up at the other end of the country - e.g. Oval which has been mentioned on here as norwich and maidstone. If it's like Marketing Enterprises, it's registered to a Nottingham address.

It's actually very scarily like a cult if you go and have a read. They target school leavers and young graduates who are seduced by promises of money and then they get sucked in by brain washing tactics. The 'MD's are sucked in more than anyone else!

Awful, awful people. You can see how some naive school leavers would get conned into thid. I dont know how these people can sleep at night.
  • I'm supposed to go to an 'open day' at The Highland Organisation in Leeds today. I've just graduated in Graphic Design and like many others I'm looking for a decent job. As the design industry has taken a bit of a battering recently I looked at marketing as an option. I emailed my CV online to several job sights and received close to 100 job matches, 95% of which were from either ETM or the Highland group. I was concerned at how easily impressed they were with my CV, but even more concerned with the fact that during the interview (in which there were 2 of us, similar to the scene in Stepbrothers) no questions were asked about my work history. Usually in interviews people jump immediately jump to my experience of working in New York. In this particular interview I wasn't offered the chance to ask any questions. I was just told to await a call had I been one of the "lucky few" selected for a second interview. Bang on 18.00 the lovely Lucy called to say I'd been successful and congradulated me and arranged for the open day. Should I go? It's in about 2 hours. No basic wage, self employment, door knocking and buying my own toilet roll all sound enticing, but, I'm desperate as sh*t. Isn't some job history better than nothing? It's 3 months since I finished studying and all I have to show for it are a handful of farty freelance design jobs.

Well i Know how you feel Mr De Niro. I graduated in a design subject and that is why i applied for these types of jobs. I really would not go if i were you. They get you to work a whole day for free and call it a 'interview' or 'introduction day' etc. Then you will struggle to make any cash, even if you work all the hours under the sun it seems!! If you go just be aware that they probably are just scammers, and if you've read the info here, just keep it in mind! If i were you i would rather work any other job than this!!! I.e. Shop or bar work would be more reliable with guarenteed income until a real job offer comes along.

Oh and JonBoy....i don't think they are there anymore...but i can probably guarantee they have just changed their name or something!!! Probably because whenever someone types in their company name to google they come up with the MSE forums!!! hahahaha! The one on Bold street just changed their names and hadnt even the decency to take down the old company logo when i went for my 'interview'!

  • I never went. I'm gonna find a 'real' job. Get more experience being self-employed and I'll even consider bar or restaurant work. There's plenty of it in Leeds. I'll stay away from dodgy 'marketing' firms in future.

In 2006 when i was desperate for a job, i applied to these clowns in Norwich, got a phone call 30 immediately i sent my CV online. was invited for an interview the next day, i went (was desperate).
Opal and MEUk share same office space in a builing at Anglia square.
i was offered the job straight, after discussing football with the interviewer who is the MD of the coy.
we went out on the field, next day in a small town "cowson" to sell talk talk line and bb,that was when i fully discovered what its all about.
The next day Kate called me when i did not report to the office, i told her i broke my leg, she continued calling for about 4 weeks asking when i'm fit to return to work.
when she rang me on a bad morning, i just told her i'm not showing up cos i think they are clowns, she stopped.
Though the vision may not be the true future of man but it can't be completely beyond his control.

Haha, i love the excuse...i broke my leg!!! Lets be honest...they probably would have let you work with a broken leg anyway...have you hobbling round the streets on crutches with your clipboard all hours of the day trying to meet your 'targets'!!
