I have a feeling there's a massive flaw in your argument....
    And that would be...
  • ...the relatively massive strength of the Euro against the pound at the moment is actually skewing the figures. Last year, using your 'formula', it would have looked like the French were paying much less for their fuel on account of the pound being much stronger against the Euro than it is now!
Using this criteria is irrelevant, anyway; just because the Euro is strong against the pound doesn't mean the French are paying MORE for their gas/electric than we are - it just means that, if they were to bring it over here, use it, convert their Euros to pounds then pay EDF they would be paying more! Our pound now gets less Euros BUT when you convert it the other way for purposes of trying to compare prices it means there's MORE pence to the Euro than previously....

Plus, I would be very interested in getting my electricity at 9p per kwh with no standing charge and no Tier 1. Are you entirely sure that figure is correct? I'm with Click 5 (Yorkshire region) and pay 8p on Tier 2 (after paying 28p on first 500 kwhs!)

But like you know maths isn't exactly my strongest subject

It really is not necessary to keep demonstrating that fact.

Personally I think you are being too hard on yourself, your maths is much better than your logic!
  • Blimey, Cardew, what took you so long? Did the '1Carminestocky has posted' alarm malfunction or were you tucked up in bed??

The exchange rate would need to be €2 to £1 to get close to the French prices.

EDF Energy Online V5 Dual Fuel DD prices for the old 'Eastern Electricity' region -
10.86p for the first 225 kWh per quarter and then 8.05p
£8.40 DD discount and £25.20 Dual Fuel discount.

The difference between 10.86 and 8.05 being the standing charge = 2.81 x (225 x 4) = £25.29, which is wiped out by the discounts.
I'm with Click 5 (Yorkshire region) and pay 8p on Tier 2 (after paying 28p on first 500 kwhs!)
Click 5 'Eastern Electricity' region -
21.326p on the first 125kWh per quarter, and then 7.270p

    You could always move south.

I have signed up just to show my feelings dont care about the arguments above this has to stop and get sorted out for all our sakes iam not the one to do that and neither is anybody else on this board its up to the elected goverment and the industry.

No one is critisizing any company making a profit its just how much they are making and not getting enough reinvested back but rather shared out between themselves thats the problem.
Look after the pennies and the pounds will spend themselves

As UK Average bills are in the region of £1,200 a year, what profit per person per year of the £1,200 do you feel is a reasonable margin?

The French pay in Euros, not pounds and we can only truly compare prices if we both paid in the same currency. That would then negate the vagaries of fluctuating exchange rates. Having said that, even if it COULD be proved that the French pay more for their fuel, it's clear that a much bigger percentage of that is ploughed back into the infrastructure of the country, seen in the installation of huge storage facilities for gas and massive nuclear investment for electricity. In the privatised UK utility industry, I'm suspecting a far larger percentage of the profit leaves the country...

PS I have to say, those leccy prices you are getting are extraordinarily good!! And they are INCLUDING the recent increase? You clearly live in the cheapest part of the UK for leccy. I'm assuming the French postcode you used is similarly in the cheapest part of France for fuel (if indeed they have a ridiculous postcode lottery like we do, maybe with being state-owned they don't?)

When these industies post their profits usualy in the millions if not billions it makes no difference which part they make the money it just needs to STOP! its as simple as that.

This is not M&S were you can just not buy if the price is to high or go somewere else this is for something which is a basic human need.

As I stated in my previous post its up to the industry to to come up with a proposal and if they cannot then the goverment should step in .
