Energy Companies Price Rise Petition

Options
Hi!

Last night I made a petition on the PM's website about capping energy price rises to stop the energy companies taking the mickey. You may or may not be interested in signing the petition, i haven't told anyone about it yet and already a few have signed it, so I'm hoping it may get some support!

Pass it on to your pals if you feel it something of import!

I've sign it, good luck to us all:)
  • Thanks.

In France the same companies are held to a price rise of around 4%, but in this country its a free for all. I'm deeply suspicious of the fact that they all feel they HAVE to follow each other. Basic economics tells us that if one weren't to follow suit, they'd get all of the customers and clean up, a fact the energy customers seem to ignore.

Please sign the petition, the more we have the more chance there is of someone taking notice!

Lets get the facts straight shall we ?

"The French government has asked its energy regulator to cap electricity and gas price increases for private users to 2% and 5% respectively.
The government did not however say when the cap would come into effect."

    BBC

Not quite the same thing. There is no cap in place!

Apart from which, the French Government has, over the past 30 years, put the French population in an enviable position, about 80% of their electricity is nuclear (59 stations) and they have ensured plenty of gas storage in the country. UK can store 13 days of gas, France 122. We sell North Sea gas to France in the summer, they store it and sell it back to us in the winter at a much higher price - don't blame the energy suppliers, this is the Government's job !

Just what good do you think a petition will do ?

Nah ! I just like to see that the "facts" posted here are correct.

Successive British Governments have ignored future energy needs. There was a similar oil price "shock" in 1974, that was when the French decided to go Nuclear - what did we do ? Just sat there twiddling our thumbs - fat, dumb and happy - until now, still fat & dumb but unhappy !

Whether or not the cap in France is in place or not is quite frankly irrelevant, unless of course you're a pedant and feel the need to pull down a genuine attempt to make an opinion known to the Government.

I'm aware its the Government job, thats why i'm petitioning the Government and not the energy companies;)

I have no idea whether or not a petition will do any good. I do know however, that NOT doing a petition will have no effect at all.

You can sit there and do nothing, whilst pulling down anyone else's attempts to try and do something about this problem, but lets face it, your way we just get ripped off. My way we've at least made AN ATTEMPT at doing something about it!

Its funny you should say that. There are at least 4 (that I know of) unused gas storage facilities within a 10 mile radius of my house. One of these is actually being torn down by the national grid soon. Maybe we should use what we have?

What sort of gas storage facility?

    Like this?

    http://www.sportsartworld.com/The_Fosters_Oval_(Gasometer_end).htm

If they are then you will need to bring back the coal industry to UK(not a bad idea anyway). They store gas at normal pressure.

In this terrorist age, any old gas storage facility(usually in urban areas) is a ready made bomb just waiting for an incendiary device to be fired into it! Had the Oval Gasometer not been removed the terrorists might have disrupted the cricket - and that would not be cricket!

The security on the proposed £billion storage facilities is massive.

I'm sorry if you think I am being pedantic, but that is far from the case.
You stated "In France the same companies are held to a price rise of around 4%" - that patently is not the case - that is not pedantry.
Your incorrect statement gives the impression that the French Government has "banned" the energy suppliers from increasing their prices above a certain level - Cobblers !

Being swept along by a tide of media induced hysteria about "rip-off" Britain does nothing useful whatsoever.

If you have verifiable facts to support your case, lets see them - I'm afraid another "shock, horror" story from the Daily Wail doesn't fall into that category.
Energy prices in Britain are not dissimilar to much of the rest of Europe - that is FACT, why do we have to put up with this continual deluge if ill-informed froth about "rip-off Britain" ?

I hate to repeat myself, but as you appear to be a fairly new member of MSE I will. Several months ago in response to a similar spate of ill-infomed posts about energy costs I contacted a German friend and asked him what he was paying for his energy. Coincidentally, his supplier was eon, same as mine. He was shocked to find that he was paying 34% MORE than I was.
