In recent times I've been getting the message 'internal virus database is out of date' but when I try to update I get the dialog box 'update was unsuccessful'.
Anyone know why or recommend a fix?

I seem to remember some discussion of this previously. Does the 8.0 version automatically uninstal 7.5, then, or are there issues?
I'm running Vista Basic.0 -
yes , does uninstall the old versionEx forum ambassador

The OP might not want to upgrade to v7.5 - there have been plenty of issues, it's slower, most resource hungry, all well covered. Better to troubleshoot than just blanket recommend the new version perhaps?
Check your firewall and internet connection first - have you made any alterations or updates to these which may prevent AVG from connecting out?
Right-click the AVG icon and choose "check for updates" to see if that will function manually. Just checked on a laptop running 7.5 and it works fine.0 -

Right, so assuming I want to avoid all that, what are the alternatives to AVG?0 -
I installed AVG today on the basis of the free advice, and then my PC was incredibly slow ( 8 minutes to start up) and then the whole thing kept freezing. I managed to re boot it and quickly do a system restore after about 6 attempts, so will not be putting AVG back on what else is a good recommendation please????0

After coming back from holiday I found that my laptop wasn't updating AVG 7.5 properly. The little symbol at the bottom right of the screen was grey rather than in colour and said it wasn't up to date. Every time I clicked check for updates it said unsuccessful.
Eventually I noticed that there was a message saying the laptop needed to be restarted and once I'd rebooted the updates were installed ok and the AVG symbol was in colour.
Having noticed the requirement to reboot I found every day that AVG wanted the laptop rebooted to install the updates - I found this odd as our desktop didn't need a reboot to update.
I googled and found that a setting in AVG had changed which meant that the update didn't install and complete until the laptop was rebooted.
To fix this I launched AVG Control Centre where I could see a little red cross next to Update Manager. I right clicked on update manager and selected Properties. On the Properties tab I selected Update Immediately (Require confirmation from user if restart is required) - changing it from Update upon next computer restart.
Once I'd clicked on ok AVG completed it's update and the symbol at the bottom right was colour again.
Now my AVG 7.5 updates happily and completely each time.
Hope that helps.0 -

Assuming you haven't read the FAQ or recommended free anti-virus packages on this forum... (try a search) if you don't want to sort out why AVG doesn't work, then two of the best other than AVG are:
Avast and Avira AntiVir
Also if you want some on-line virus scanners try: PC Problems? - links to free online virus scanners0 -
Although hasn't official support for updating AVG 7.5 (free) virus definitions already ended? http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?1,136697,backpage=,sv="She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
