I thought it'd been extended to December? They still update fine on one of my test laptops... but perhaps "support" has been ended, with just definitions available until Dec?0 -

Not what it says in that link which is an annoucement on AVG's own forums. The extension to December is only apparently for the paid for version of AVG 7.5."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

My AVG 7.5 says that it's anti-virus database was last updated on 11th Sept.0

After coming back from holiday I found that my laptop wasn't updating AVG 7.5 properly. The little symbol at the bottom right of the screen was grey rather than in colour and said it wasn't up to date. Every time I clicked check for updates it said unsuccessful.
Eventually I noticed that there was a message saying the laptop needed to be restarted and once I'd rebooted the updates were installed ok and the AVG symbol was in colour.
Having noticed the requirement to reboot I found every day that AVG wanted the laptop rebooted to install the updates - I found this odd as our desktop didn't need a reboot to update.
I googled and found that a setting in AVG had changed which meant that the update didn't install and complete until the laptop was rebooted.
To fix this I launched AVG Control Centre where I could see a little red cross next to Update Manager. I right clicked on update manager and selected Properties. On the Properties tab I selected Update Immediately (Require confirmation from user if restart is required) - changing it from Update upon next computer restart.
Once I'd clicked on ok AVG completed it's update and the symbol at the bottom right was colour again.
Now my AVG 7.5 updates happily and completely each time.
Hope that helps.
This is precisely the problem I have - and yet your solution doesn't seem to work for me. I just keep getting the 'update unsuccessful' message.
Looks like I might have to switch to one of the others. Given all the warnings about AVG 8.0, this might not be the worst idea anyway.0 -
Assuming you haven't read the FAQ or recommended free anti-virus packages on this forum... (try a search) if you don't want to sort out why AVG doesn't work, then two of the best other than AVG are:
Avast and Avira AntiVir
Also if you want some on-line virus scanners try: PC Problems? - links to free online virus scanners
Which of these would people support? Is there any consensus for which is the better? Am using Vista.0 -

Why don't you upgrade to AVG 8? If you install from the command line as follows:
C:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
it will not install the safe search/link scanner/net nanny stuff i.e. just like AVG 7.5 used to be but improved. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I won't upgrade because of all the adverse comments and issues people have had with it.
Oh, and see this:

Most of these are due to ignorance! I have installed it on many machines with no problems! If you insist on being a sheep, follow the others.

Thanks for the free insult.
That's you down as a Grisoft shareholder.
Feel free to check out these 'sheep', most of whom seem to prefer Avast:
