I am thinking about just getting broadband from Virgin. I have TV and phone and my bill should be roughly £35 a month (L broadband, M phone and L TV)
But even though I am careful with the phone, my bill is too high, sometimes more than double that (am blaming members of the family for using the phone)
They have messed around with the channel packages as well. The M+ is like freeview!

Off to install my old freeview box and disconnect my phone and TV
  • Hello there, wonder if anyone could give me any advice please? My year's subscription to Virgin TV ends in Feb, I have a package which is £17.50 a month, for this i get the V+ recording facility and the basic channel package. I got the V+ box free because I had a total NIGHTMARE setting the whole thing up.
I have 2 questions, first of all if I don't ring them and either cancel or amend my package will they just automatically roll me onto another year (as the mobile phone companies tend to)? And will they be willing to haggle down the cost? They called me a couple of months ago offering me free calls but I don't have a home phone and I don't want broadband, the only thing I would be interested in is a cost reduction...but is this likely? I guess the only way to find out is to call them but would be interested in other people's opinions/ experiences.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You're no longer in the 12month or whatever length contract once the period elapses but you'll continue paying monthly for both tv nd mobile.
  • Sorry you didnt have a good experience.
They usually will not give you two offers within a 6month period.
I suggest you call them and ask what offers they have for old customers to help reduce their bills. They'll suggest 50% off for 6months, ask if they can do anything else esp cause of ur circumstance. Then chip in that the box is a very old one and acts up can they do anything about it? He'll say he cant offer a new box cos he's given u 50% then hesitate and consider aloud if u sld just leave it to be cancelled cos of the expense of a new box, he'll offer to send an engineer and the eng will come witha hd box.
This is what happened to me.
I hope u get your channels back on dear.
  • Just a little update!

Managed to get through to a lovely guy, explained that I wanted to leave & was going to get a FreeSat/Freeview & that I had been cut off twice! He straight away offered me a FREE Sky+HD box & FREE instalation! So I managed to get them down from £159 to £0. I had to agree to a 12 month contract (would have probably stayed anyway!) so I will still have to pay the £24.50 that I pay now but will have the Sky+ facility!

Its definatly worth calling back again if you don't get offered a good deal! Good luck!

    Dx

I got the same deal. No problem at all. I just asked if Sky could offer me any incentive to stay with them rather than move to Virgin as I was fed up not having all Sky functionality on my old Digibox.

Ive just got the same offer, free install, free sky+hd box (upgrade from sky+) 12 month contract.

i could have taken the free for 6 months hd sub but I dont think I would gain many channels as im only on a basic package anyway.

Now my only major headache is transferring the entire last series of Doctor Who onto my POS dvd recorder ! Would have liked to have put my old sky+ box upstairs for the kids to watch as and when but according to C.S. once the new machine is in I wont be able to access the hard drive ?

  • I've called three times since 23rd December and the only offer I get is a 25% reduction (taking it to about £16) but I'm tied in for 12 months. Normally a good deal, but I don't want to be tied in to a 12 month contract at the moment, just in case the big R looms at work!
