No not at all. You could have read the 10past6s post as "You shouldnt be posting here and taking up the forum" or "here try this site it might help you". Its difficult to tell sometimes as peoples expressions/mannerisms are not easily conveyed in just one sentence.

But if it solves your problem a quick search by someone else with the same problem BOOM you have a solution.

Quick rundown is

Writer = Word processor. (MS Word from MS Office)
Base = Database (MS Access)
Calc = Spreadsheet (MS Excel)
Impress = Presentation (MS Powerpoint)
Draw = flowcharts, logo designer

just open what you need do what you want then hit File -Save

You may want to be aware that if you are planning on sending stuff to other people who don't have OO then saving in the MS format (.doc; .xls) would be a good idea.
